MY K. of C. BREAKFAST
Bafflement has been the emotion of choice lately in trying to understand the Democrats hold on unions. Not the union leaders, mind you, but the members. A case in point….
A close personal friend of mine works for the local water utility. He comes from humble means and has worked hard his whole life to support his family. He is one of the most devout Catholics I know and he is one who truly lives his faith. He is pro-life and has supported this cause with his money and time. He is a second amendment supporter and NRA life member. He is also a strong democratic party supporter.
My friend believes, with as much zeal as for his Catholic faith, that the democrats are for “the little guy”. That is, for him whom he perceives a “a working stiff little guy”. He believes that the republicans are for the rich, despite the fact that the democrats define “the rich” as anyone who works. This belief in the democrats as pro-union, pro-working stiff, is so strong that he looks the other way at their pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, anti-Christian stance seemingly as if it were not even there. This ideological disconnect, is the source of my bafflement because the elite, effete, democrats have nothing but contempt for his religious convictions, his pro-life stance, and his working stiff status.
And so on Sunday past I joined my friend at his local Knights of Columbus for a pancake breakfast. The featured speaker at this Catholic men’s organization based on fidelity, faith and Christian virtue was our U.S. Congressman who is ardently pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, and a gun grabber; and for the most part has acted consistently against the best interests of the union. One might logically think that the congressman would receive a cold shoulder or some reproach about his stances on these issues. But then one would be wrong as he was warmly welcomed as a fellow brother in the struggle, who was there in Washington as the champion of the working guy. His record flies in the face of his obviously successful public relations act of being for the people whom he obviously by his actions must despise.
Of course, I could not resist the temptation to taunt the good congressman with some interesting questions regarding his support of gun control, abortion rights, and pro-homosexual stance - which caused him obvious discomfort and perhaps for the briefest of moments caused the audience to actually think. But the most shocking of moments came when after the congressman left. A number of the knights came and said that I had acted ungraciously to their guest speaker. Again, not being able to resist temptation, I pointed out his stances were inconsistent and incompatible with their stated beliefs and charter as Knights. That of course fell on deaf ears.
At least the pancakes were good.
