MY BOYCOTT OF Q101 IN CHICAGO……
I have a confession to make. I like Alternative music. Always have. And I liked New Wave and Punk Music before that. I cut my teeth musically in a Punk Band way back in 1980. So it probably would be little surprise that I listened to Q101 in Chicago, an alternative station. Until today.
Last evening, while driving the kids to the YMCA for Tae Kwon Do class, the DJ proceded to rant about President Bush. I am a strong believer in free speech, but just as big a believer in civility in public discourse, particularly on the public airwaves. You might wonder what words of insight the dj might offer regarding President Bush’s upcoming speech, but your wondering would be in vain. What was offered was “insightful” things such as calling the President a “douche bag hick from Texas”. Like I said, free speech and all. Although being of Italian decent, I will share an old Italian proverb that says “there is nothing quite as expensive as free”. Hopefully a lesson to that particular dj and Q101 in general.
Of course I have written the program director at the station. As well as Budweiser, American Airlines, U.S. Navy, Pepsi Cola, which advertised on that show. I know that the advertisers recon that any individual contact is representative of about 5000 people in the demographic market, so it might help to write them as well.
Now I know the “if you don’t like it change the dial” arguement. And change the dial I shall. If you would like to write Q101, visit them at http://q101.com and click the “contact us” link.
