Hair Cut 100.
In stark contrast to Common Sense’s and Gus’ recently posted accounts of conversations with members of the “peace at all costs” crowd, I had a most interesting conversation with a young lady that, well, gives me hope for the future.
I was getting a long delayed hair cut, and the thought of 15 minutes of small talk with a vacuous hair stylist at Fantastic Sam’s was something I was reconciled to simply endure, imagine my pleasant surprise to discover that a conservative woman does exist in this ‘burb. When she asked me what my plans were for the weekend, I mentioned that if I find a decent topic, I may write about it at the Chapin Nation web log; carefully avoiding any mention of our “hot chicks and a gaggle of tools” theme. When asked what I write about, I answered that we write op/ed and analysis of politics, society, Bush, Kerry, and the war—among other things—again avoiding the fact that we are part of the right wing conspiracy. At the mention of Kerry, she showed her true colors: “I hate that guy”. Really? The palaver then took a sharp turn to the right, if you catch my drift. What stuck in my mind was that her family had a long military history, and that she had lost a cousin in the war, “this war? I asked, “yes”, she answered. Ironically, another came home the very same day the family heard of the loss. She maintained that even if you don’t believe in the war, one must believe in the men and women fighting it, and that the media is aiding the enemy. Her cousins both elected to serve, indeed, they requested to be sent to Iraq to fight, knowing full well that they could end up making the ultimate sacrifice.
If she weren’t 20 years too young, I’d have asked her for her phone number. I never did ask if she plans on voting… I sure hope she does.
