Schools of the Absurd.
Ryan Sager shines a bright spotlight of shame upon yet another example of our tax dollars at work. New York is embracing a concept in education that leaves students woefully ill prepared for any type of future employment outside of teaching the same drivel they learned. Sprouting like so many mushrooms are schools with themes like: “Peace and Diversity”, Urban Peace Academy”, and “Hip Hop & Citizenship”, where students don’t take exams, and grades are portfolio based.
“Take the Urban Peace Academy (the names blur together after a while), which New Visions opened in East Harlem in 1993.
The school says it addresses “issues of peace and justice, wealth and power, racism and oppression and the creation of ourselves and our cultures.” What’s missing there? Hint: Fewer than half of Urban Peace Academy’s class of 2003 met state Regents English standards — and none met Regents math standards.” [emphasis mine]
Apparently any semblance of real learning has taken a back seat to self-esteem and political activism. How the idealogs at New Visions can sleep at night–knowing full well the scam they are foisting upon the public they are paid to serve with at least an attempt at education–is completely ineffable. Or, perhaps they are so deluded and full of themselves that they actually believe in this crap?
