`Morning-after pill’ not abortion, scientists say
[S]cientists say there is no scientific evidence the pills prevent implantation–and considerable evidence they work mainly by blocking the release of an egg from the woman’s ovary, so no embryo is formed.
“The pervasive myth out there is that emergency contraception is an abortifacient,” said Dr. David Archer, director of clinical research at the Contraceptive Research and Development Program of Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.
“But there’s no evidence scientifically that that’s true.”For one thing, Archer points out, emergency contraception generally doesn’t work if taken after a woman has ovulated.
Assimilation key to immigration
America’s genius has always been assimilation, taking immigrants and turning them into Americans. Yet our current debates on immigration focus on only one side of the issue–the massive waves of illegal immigrants that we seem unable to stop.
Just call it consumer robbery: The ethanol push will cost you a lot more at the pump
We consume more energy making ethanol than we save.On the farm, it takes fossil fuel energy to plant, cultivate, fertilize, harvest and transport corn.
More fossil energy is consumed crushing, fermenting and distilling corn into ethanol. Then comes the fossil fuel consumed in shipping and the cost of mixing it with gasoline. In effect, we’re using raw fuel to make raw fuel, a curious way to save energy.
And not very efficient energy at that. Ethanol burns less efficiently than gasoline, so we’ll have to use more of it, which adds to its cost.
What Women Want
Gino Biondi, who, after leading the two-year research campaign, can safely be considered an expert. “[Women] want an all-American, real classic, strong guy who can build stuff,” he said. Is that all? Actually, no. Women also want, he said, “a guy who is sensitive, who appreciates her and gives her romance.” And “whose strength goes beyond physical characteristics to strength of character.”
There’s more. “But what men think of as strength of character is different from what women think. To women, strength of character is when he says, `Honey, I know you had a hard day. I’m gonna cook dinner.’ Guys think it’s, `Honey, I’ll take care of the yardwork.’”Better news for men: “
One of the insights we had was, `[A man] doesn’t have to be perfect; he just has to try,’ ” said Biondi. In one of the videos, the Brawny man tries to serenade you on the guitar but — adorably — forgets the words.
