The results of an exhaustive autopsy on Terri Schiavo completely validated Michael Schiavo’s contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state and that common sense and medical wisdom dictated that she be allowed to die with dignity.
Michael Schiavo was ridiculed, vilified and demonized by the far right, but now it turns out that he was right all along.
Medical examiner Jon Thogmartin concluded that Schiavo’s brain was “profoundly atrophied,†and weighed about half of what a normal brain weighs. In other words it weighed about what a normal brain of a right wing fanatic weighs.
The damage to her brain was irreversible, he said, and “no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons.†I remember the ridiculous claims of right to life fanatics that Terri could be rehabilitated, but I don’t expect them to admit that they were wrong.
The vision centers of Schiavo’s brain were dead, Thogmartin said, and she was blind. She was blind, she never visually recognized her parents, as they so desperately claimed.
I haven’t read any press releases by Christian organizations apologizing for defaming Michael Schiavo. On the contrary, they continue slandering his good name. This reaction is typical of Christian fanatics. When the Bible is proven to be historically and scientifically inaccurate, they deny reality, and resort to personal attacks.
Prime example of this stubbornness and unwillingness to accept reality is Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s reaction to Schiavo’s autopsy results.
Gov. Bush who criticized the many court rulings that Schiavo’s feeding tube be removed is requesting that a prosecutor investigate why Terri Schiavo collapsed and whether Michael Schiavo failed to call 911 quickly enough way back in 1990.
Jeb Bush, please give it a rest! Have some respect for the dead and stop slandering the character of Michael Schiavo.
