Trump and Bolton: The New UN Clean-Up Team?

2005-07-31
By

All that I know of President Bush’s UN Nominee John Bolton is that he is tough and he is driving both the leftist Democrat contingent and the wimpy liberal Republican one out of their minds. That’s excellent and, most certainly good enough for my support! It’s inordinately transparent that the neo-lib and leftist Dem leadership (Kennedy, Reid, Durbin, Schumer et al) and Republican Senators John “the compromiser” McCain and “weepy” George Voinovich will oppose his nomination, vigorously. The option left to President Bush is a recess appointment. Please, Mr. President, go for it! We already know that the hard-line leftist Democrats are going to fight Judge John Roberts’ SCOTUS appointment. Let’s get Bolton installed as UN Ambassador so that we can fully concentrate on ensuring Roberts’ victory. Besides, the UN needs and requires a strong US Ambassador to keep it in line; as it has already been hit with one criminal scandal after another. If the only way to even begin to bring the UN’s outrageous behaviors into check is a tough Bolton—so be it. Diplomatic, obliging and hand-wringing “leadership” hasn’t worked. Increasingly, it sounds as if the former Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security will fill the bill.

Then there is Donald Trump, who has tried in the past and is currently working toward helping the UN solve its financial renovation issues. Note: In the interest of full disclosure, I freely admit that Mr. Trump is one of my personal favorites and that I am totally addicted to The Apprentice.

As was to be expected, on “The Donald’s” first attempt to assist the UN several years ago, he was apparently met with a less-than-enthusiastic-response by Kofi Annan. Now, however, Trump has testified before a Senate Homeland Security subcommittee on the cost of UN renovations and advised them that he can save the UN (and ultimately the US taxpayer) approximately $2B dollars—yes that’s two-billion with a “B”. Trump has even offered his consulting services, for the project, pro-bono! Getting Trump’s services for free is an amazing gift. But, Kofi Annan still appears to be “lukewarm” to the idea. My guess is that, if Trump is involved in the project, there would be too much scrutiny of where all of the money will be allocated. This is definitely something we taxpayers want. However, in consideration of Mr. Annan’s current scandal-ridden UN, the UN Secretary General is probably not jumping up and down at the prospect of someone running the project who would pay an inordinate amount of attention to all of the funds. Hmmm. I suspect that a Trump-run organization might just know where almost every dollar has gone and to whom it has been paid. In light of recent UN history, I doubt Kofi and his nation-collective will be pleased. That, of course, is precisely why Trump would be an invaluable asset.

One thing that remains crystal clear is that both Bolton and Trump have been street-fighters when it’s been necessary. They each have the reputation of being tough—very tough—when it’s necessary. That’s something we need today in business, politics and yes—even diplomats. Without tough-mindedness and actions, we the people will continue to be gouged by the UN forever; with said gouging increasing geometrically. Why? Because, thus far, the UN’s leadership has been allowed to get away with it. A UN clean-up is long overdue. And Bolton and Trump are two of the guys with the mops.

Yep! Between McCain and Voinovich, some of these lib Republicans are trying more and more to sound like their leftist Dem buds. Guess they wanna’ get “invites” from the leftist-elites.

Time for the voters to get rid of them. Or, maybe they can pull a Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords’ move!

I’m afraid that Mr. Annan and his syndicate of criminal nations will oppose anything that does not place a great deal of cash in his personal pockets.

Sher said : “Besides, the UN needs and requires a strong US Ambassador to keep it in line; as it has already been hit with one criminal scandal after another”.

So it is our job to keep it in line huh ? And why would we necessarily be good at this, or even able to do this?
And we too, have had scandal after scandal, with both Democrat and Republican administrations. We have no perfect slate from which we can point fingers from and demand this or that.

Some more of my thoughts. That is more of the “our way or the highway” thinking that we were discussing in the earlier Pennsylavania issue. Sher’s thinking begins not with an outlook of cooperation between countries and (possible) hopeful unity, but rather an abrasive tone of “here we are, this is what we want you to do” approach. And the second that one negative word is said about Bolton by some other country, it will be labeled “uncooperative” by her and “obstuctionist.” Yet WE will be the one who sends in the “tough guy to kick some UN ass.”

We provide the lion’s share of the UN’s funding. That means I pay for it and so do you. The one who pays with taxpayers’ deep pockets should have more clout than those who don’t.

Yes, nion, hopefully we will. The UN members, including Annan and his son, have apparently been stealing the organization blind. Unfortunately, they have left us no choice but, to take off our gloves and send in the big boys. The UN must be “cleaned up” if it is to survive,

A liberal is one who associates with ideals of individual freedom, greater intellectual liberty, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives, such as the U.S. Constitution. All Americans, to the extent that they value the principles on which this great nation was founded, are de facto liberals whether Republican or Democrat.

The U.S. Constitution is an unquestionably liberal document. If political liberalism presents a unilateral reflexive affront to one’s sensibilities, then one should critically reevaluate how the ideals of the U.S. Consititution can be reconciled with his own world view.

To that end, what can be said about John Bolton and the inner circle of Republican leaders with whom he is associated?

Certainly, he is not a liberal.

In the 20th century, the Republican Party has been no stranger to scandals which have struck most deeply at the core of American idealism. The Nixon administration was exposed as perpetrators of a grand illegal plot to consolidate power within the Party.

The Reagan Administration used the executive office to illegally support a campaign against the lawfully elected government of Nicaragua and conducted clandestine business with Islamic terrorists in order to fund those operations (At one point in our history, Republicans favored doing business with Islamic terrorists). These deals were hidden from the American people and they were done against the will of Congress. The Reagan Administration even vetoed a U.N. Security Council Resolution which basically said that nations should follow U.N. Resolutions. To those that believe in accountability, this veto rings hypocritically when, a decade later, the Bush Administration would base an argument for war on noncompliance with U.N. Resolutions.

And John Bolton was right there for all of it. John Bolton has made a career out of defying Congress. During the Iran-Contra investigations, John Bolton refused to comply with Congessional demands for records. Bolton also believed that the Independent Counsel law was unconstitutional and did everything he could do preempt Congress’s efforts to investigate Iran-Contra.

To people that believe that might makes right, that believe that they are automatically possessed of superior moral authority, that the Executive does not need to answer to Congress or the people, John Bolton is a hero. He is a person of strong convictions who wastes no energy worrying about liberal ideals such as accountability, personal freedoms, and the Constitution.

As it stands, Bolton will probably get a recess appointment to the U.N. Nobody will care very much, lest it divert attention from the Supreme Court nomination process.

As was stated this last Sunday on Meet the Press, “If there was a vote in Congress right now, there would probably not be many votes for John Bolton. But the
president has the right to have a voice for his administration in the U.N. and noone will probably complain too much right now.”

Considering the record of John Bolton, he is the perfect voice for the Bush Administration in the U.N.

“Sher’s thinking begins not with an outlook of cooperation between countries and (possible) hopeful unity, but rather an abrasive tone of “here we are, this is what we want you to do” approach”

The “outlook of cooperation” with the UN hasn’t worked for years. It’s time for a new approach or to do away with the UN altogether. The “cooperation” and “look the other way tactics” that had been adopted by our UN Ambassadors is one of the things that allowed the UN’s now open corruption to exist.

If we don’t reel in the UN’s leadership from corruption and assist in taking it back to actually helping troubled countries (instead of ‘helping themselves’ to the contributed money) we really should resign from this corrupt organization and tell it to find another country to base its operations. “Keeping your enemies close” can only go so far!

    “William Jefferson Clinton-

    et. al”

    Two comments.

Firstly, none of the mentioned scandals linked to Democrats involved sweeping misuse of Executive powers on a national or international scale. Human beings are what they are (one could easily compile such a list for the other party). Compared to the Iran-Contra affair which cost millions of tax payers dollars, involved clandestine bargaining with Islamo-Fascists, and resulted in indictments and convictions, the James McGreevy issue is a non-sequitir (there was no criminal action at all in his case … unless you believe that homosexuality is, itself, a crime).

Secondly, while Clinton was the only president in the 20th century ever to have been impeached, his scandal was a largely personal affair that did not involve sweeping misuse of Executive powers.

However if you consider the scandals in the Executive Branch that have struck most deeply at the heart of American Idealism (Watergate; Iran-Contra; Abu-Ghraib; history has yet to make a final determination on Iraq) it is the Republican Party that has been involved and since 1980 it has been largely the same figures in the inner-circle of Republican leadership: Wolfowicz, Cheney, Negroponte, Bolton, Rumsfeld, etc.

There’s no excusing Clinton’s misstep of conscience while serving as the leader of the free world.

But I’ve never seen photographs of William Jefferson Clinton shaking hands with Saddam Hussein during his rise to power (right, Rummy?)

In my opinion, Bolton’s appointment is a slap in the face to anyone who believes that Americans should appeal to a higher moral standard, that figures in our government should be accountable to the people, and who values the idealistic liberal principles on which our nation was founded.

“Please forgive me, Sir, but your comments are ludicrously unfounded.”

    I am listening. How so?

    “Your leftist-Democrats …”

I believe in a government associated with individual freedom, free self-regulating markets, greater intellectual liberty, greater individual freedom from the government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives, such as the U.S. Constitution.

While this may make me liberal in the classical sense, protestations to the contrary, this does not make me a leftist. I abhor blanket socialism.

“…have made the decision to block and smear all individuals that President Bush appoints to anything and everything. Theirs and your petulance is showing—and quite badly, I might add.”

I applaud President Bush’s selection of John Roberts for associate justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. Like most Americans, I believe that Judge Roberts’ credentials are beyond reproach, and I predict that he will be appointed to the bench with at least a 70% vote in the Senate.

For the reasons I have previously mentioned — substantively by virtue of his substantial role in the Iran-Contra Affair — I believe that John Bolton is an exceedingly bad choice for the U.N. Why would we want an ambassador to the U.N. who was an active part of an administration that illegally negotiated with Islamic terrorists at a time when we are engaged in a global war on terror perpetrated by Islamic terrorists? What kind of message does that send to the U.N. and to the People.

Nevertheless, I expect that he will get a recess appointment to that post today.

by virtue of his substantial role in the Iran-Contra Affair — I believe that John Bolton is an exceedingly bad choice for the U.N.

Substantial role in the Iran-Contra affair”? Let’s see, Bolton is mention once in Chapter 23 of the Walsh Iran-Contra Report documents and that is that he attended one of them (from Item 14 “…John Bolton of the Justice Department attended the SSCI session only”):

    http://www.fas.org/irp/
    offdocs/walsh/chap_23.htm

Actually there has been a concerted effort to tie Bolton to Iran-Contra by including, on “certain” websites, Bolton’s activities surrounding N. Korea, which had little to nothing to do with Iran-Contra. IE “Certain “high-level circles within the administration” were reported by the right-wing Washington Times to be hoping to persuade Chinese military officers to co-sponsor a coup with their North Korean counterparts against leader Kim Jong-il.
While it is not clear the proposals have been acted on concretely, the Times noted that the Pentagon leadership disagrees strongly with the State Department’s efforts to engage Kim in talks to persuade him to abandon his nuclear-weapons program in exchange for a non-aggression pledge.

Just before Korea agreed to resume talks recently, Under Secretary of State John Bolton, widely considered to be much closer to the Pentagon hawks than his superiors at the State Department, delivered a blistering attack on Kim in what was seen by analysts as a deliberate provocation.” The following URL is but, one of many.

Bolton should be impeached on his hair alone. Noone who is stupid enough to think that he is fooling anyone with that rug should be placed in a position of power. Also, he could not even manage to tell the truth and say that he friggin’ testified to the grand jury about the Valarie Plame thingy. GREAT start!

As far as trump goes, how many times has he had to declare bankruptcy? And he’s your fiscal hero? Also my comments about the bad hairpiece go triple for him.

Leave it to rich to provide nothing but, babble–in his own inimitable way of utilizing many words that mean and say absolutely nothing.

“As far as trump goes, how many times has he had to declare bankruptcy?”

What’s your point? Many very successful people have declared bankruptcy. Trump is an original and is still one of the wealthiest and most successful people in the US, if not the world. How much are YOU worth, richie-boy?

Ok, wait. So it means NOTHING that Bolton flat out lied to congress?
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/28/AR2005072801269.html

and it means NOTHING when a spoiled rich kid, grows up and is allowed to declare bankruptcy multiple times only because taking him to court would wind up bankrupting the people who loaned him the money?

Seriously, look into the hype around Trump and you will see that he’s nothing but an average land speculator who manged to overextend himself so far that people couldn’t afford to let him fail.

Is that supposed to be an argument? I suppose if it is, people could just tell you “Oh you’re just jealous of Osama Bin Laden” after all he is a fabulously wealthy and therefore “successful” individual, right?

Your counterpoints are truly amazing. Really.

Think about the facts that you are willfully evading at some point, please.

“Firstly, none of the mentioned scandals linked to Democrats involved sweeping misuse of Executive powers on a national or international scale.”

#1 President Bush IS NOT misusing the Executive Branch of gov’t, as you suggest, “on a national or international scale.”

#2. There simply haven’t been many Dem POTUSs in the last 50 years…
