The final sentence from my last post reminded me of my first taste of PC censure of a major corporation: The elimination of the Frito Bandito.
Most of you (except Gus) are too young to remember the corn chip stealing, bandoleer draped, sombrero wearing Mexican… er, Hispanic. I even had one of the promotional erasure head figures back in the late sixties. I never used it for fear that his sombrero would turn into a plate on his little head.
Here’s the jingle:
Ayiee, yie-yie-yieeee,
I am dee Frito Bandito.
I love Frito’s Corn Chips,
I love dem I do.
I love Frito’s Corn Chips,
I take dem from you.
Heh. You can almost make out the tune just reading it… or is that just my memory kicking in? Anyway, I guess it’s now okay to make fun of males or even to throw rocks at boys because, ya know, we have all the power and are privileged and stuff, but don’t you dare even mildly use the slightest perceived insulting humor aimed at any protected, victimized group lest you risk the wrath of the PC police. And besides, don’t we have a sense of humor?
I realize this is an old topic, but I miss the Frito Bandito.
