I’m sure most of you have heard about Bill Bennett’s explosive comments regarding the long term social effects of abortion:
http://www.nationalreview.com/mccarthy/mccarthy200509301104.asp
“I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could  if that were your sole purpose  you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down.†Was he suggesting such a thing? Was he saying that such a thing should even be considered in the real world? Of course not. His whole point was that such considerations are patently absurd, and thus he was quick to add: “That would be an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do.â€ÂÂ
Even though it’s clearly obvious that he was making an intellectual point rather than advocating a horrid public policy change he’s being crucified for saying, in graphic terms, the Emperor has no clothes. Will Bennett be crucified for saying something that members of the moderate right are terrified that they’ll be accused of thinking precisely because members of the left believe it themselves (but feel that they have a credible deniability?)
Leftists had often pointed to Western European countries and Canada as socialist paradises because of relatively low crime rates and a higher standard of living. But until comparatively recently (even within the last decade), Europe had largely been filled with native Europeans who had low crime rates overall. Even in Eastern Europe, random murders and violent crime are rare compared to the States. In the most crime ridden sections of Odessa, my wife and I felt reasonably safe walking home at night provided we stuck to well-lit areas. In inner cities in the states, it’s tragic that European tourists have been gunned down for _driving_ at the wrong freeway exit.
