While on a bus tour in Moscow yesterday…

…with my mother and a friend of her who accompanied her I noticed an American man and three women on the same tour. I overheard that the man and one of the women, a Ukrainian who lived in the US for the past six years, were married in the Ukraine recently. The other two women were the man’s sisters and all of them had come to Moscow to site-see.

I thought it fitting that the two sisters, about the same age as their brother’s wife were not married. That is, it fits my worldview. Why would an American man marry an American woman if he could marry a woman from a country in which the women still respect men? My mother’s friend commented on the fact that I had come to Russia to meet a wife, “Aren’t their any nice girls in America,” and after I had explained my dating woes, “You just chose poorly.” Maybe, but if I did then so have so many of my friends who have put up with much more crap than I do with my lovely Russian girl. The odds seem to be in favor of the notion that American women do not treat men as well as women in other countries. After she told me I chose poorly she said she had a very nice niece who lived in Chicago who would love to met a good man and get married, she is 42. No thanks.

    Were you sure that this man’s two sisters were necessarily single? It’s possible they had left their husbands (and children) at home and have a “family” outing with their sibling.

    In regards to the 42 y/o woman in Chicago: There are plenty of 42 y/o single women in Eastern Europe too. Some of them are quite pleasant but haven’t yet found a boyfriend for whatever reason. What differentiates Eastern Europe (and even much of Western Europe) from the states is that there are fewer such women because they generally take the intiative more. It’s not all about “men choosing poorly” whereby they have to rummage through a room of passive women to find the gem: Nice traditional foreign women are surprisingly more pragmatic and open.

    Sadly, I have seen signs in many Eastern European countries that they are “modernizing” and becoming similar to the states, but they lack the cultural context we’ve had here: There isn’t the same level of political correctness and nationalistic bashing we experience here. I remember in college seeing women who both complained endlessly about being oppressed by the most evil country in the world AND then turned around simultaneously and whined that the USA wasn’t doing enough to free other women in other countries. Hilarious really.

    I looked, no rings. PK, I think you can find lonely 40+ year old women anywhere. The difference over here is that the women start looking for husbands much earlier and put a lot of effort into keeping a good man. There are no women’s studies programs brainwashing these girls into career above all. That is why I meet a cute 19 year old girl in Uralsk Kazakhstan who spoke decent English and who wants me to find an American man for her to marry. How many 19 year old American girls are thinking about marriage? How many cute girls cook and clean?

    They know what it takes to attract a husband and they know that they are at their most attractive when they are young. Somehow American women forgot about that.

    If I may be a devil’s advocate, it would appear to the outside observer that these young women are more interested in going to the states than in having a family in general.

    This isn’t true as I’ve seen, but the way you explain it is misleading. In all honesty, there are cute girls in the states who cook and clean but they generally are more passive. That’s what makes Eastern women so much more attractive: They have a “masculine” sensibility about them when it comes to relationships. They don’t beat around the bush (pardon the pun.)

    One of feminism’s first victories was to teach women to regard marriage as an entitlement if not an outright form of oppression and this stuck with a lot of women even in rural areas. Many nice women think that a man should read their mind and climb up their balcony. They “play games” as a Swiss woman friend told me.
