The civilized world will continue to watch and tsk-tsk without action. It is the Nazi threat all over again. Using our own framework of international and local laws to persue a hate-filled dogma which leads to world domination. I have been trying to bring together a list that describes all the positive and creative attributes that each social group defining a civilization has given to the whole of humanity. Even a single individual from the group would add “a point”.

She assumes that all Muslims are monomaniacal fanatics who have been consumed by evil and who have no motives aside from the desire to cause harm. She calls them barbarians and casts them as unhuman evil doers (objectification is an extremely important mechanism in neofascist rhetoric). And she is ready to hold them all responsible for their transgessions with righteous force. Her editorial presumes that Muslims are not like anybody else. She presumes that if Muslims did not feel threatened and had food, clothing, and shelter that they would still be rabidly seeking the demise of the non-Muslim world.

The real answer to the problem of eventually stabilizing the Middle East is understanding why these people feel so desperate, why they feel so disenfranchised, why they are enraged, and why they feel hopeless. It is from those passions that the violence stems.

There are no strong traditions of liberalism in the Middle East and no liberal elite to challenge the right wing status quo. And liberalism in the U.S. has been greatly weakened in the wake of September 11 by fear and lack of solid leadership.

So, for now it seems we just have the burning convictions of the right. And the right has nothing if not conviction in its own beliefs. And you get bet its the same way over there.
