The press is making up a big ballyhoo about Cheney waiting, turn the volume up, 12 HOURS to announce to “the press” what had happened. (Gee, that’s “water under the bridge”, get it?)
I was just discussing Ron Brown’s plane crash with someone. The democrats’ hands are so dirty with corruption, it’s amazing to see the press making so much noise.
That said, I can appreciate that Cheney may want to avoid making statements which might be misconscrued to incriminate him. This is a perfectly legal right. But even so, he is in trouble: he did pull the trigger and many hunters are saying that he didn’t follow basic safety protocols. Pheasant are shot _in the air_, not close to the ground. This doesn’t make him a bad person, but gun safety protocols exist for a reason and this can’t be stressed too strongly.

I’ve been following a thread on amspec on the subject and it appears that Cheney wasn’t especially negligent. Sure, he fired without first making sure that everyone was accounted for, but at the same time the victim (as the press loves to gloat over the term) also changed his position without calling out. He fired about 7 feet above the ground as is expected with quayle hunting.
Also in his interview, it’s clear that he really was focused on the well being of his friend and making sure the family was notified before the press. The press are now appearing to be jackals for wanting to blast the news of what happened without a chance for the other family members to find out first.
