Cartoon Jihad = Reconnaissance in Force

The protests over “blasphemous” cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed
Continue to spread and intensify: Nigeria, Indonesia ,Turkey ,Pakistan, Libya,Syria,Lebanon,Afghanistan,Somalia,Egypt,Algeria,Kashimir,Yemen,
Malaysia ,Saudi Arabia , Denmark, Norway , Russia , France , Germany , Britain , Canada , Italy , and ,of course, the USA.

While the “great thinkers” of the Western world –(including Ex-President Clinton) -beat their breasts and abase themselves with cries of “ Oh,where did we go wrong ? “ ,the Islamic militants – who started the whole fuss – are conducting a brilliant “reconnaissance in force “ against the West – and against their own governments.

A reconnaissance in force is – like the famous WWII British Commando raid on Dieppe – a means of scouting the Enemy’s defenses and responses by conducting a series of low-intensity attacks on “impregnable” fortified areas.

It is also a means of creating enough confusion to permit the smuggling of arms , supplies , and training cadres to Resistance groups ,operating behind the enemy lines.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf , in addition to issuing a predictable call for apologies from the West, has expressed grave concerns about the apparent “orchestration” of the “cartoon protests” , and there is mounting evidence his concerns are justifiable.

In the Phillipines, government forces have been put on high alert because of a possible coup attempt by mixed Islamist and Communist radicals.

In Nigeria, there have been attacks on the Dutch Shell Oil platforms-leading to their abandonment-and today, an oil pipeline was bombed.

All over the Muslim world, hundreds of thousands of shouting protestors are marching around and milling about: attacking embassies and other relatively “soft” targets. It is a safe bet these impossible-to-monitor disturbances are being used to move arms ,explosives , and key people into staging areas and safehouses.

The target in many of these places will be the local governments : governments the Islamic radicals are determined to overthrow and supplant with Taliban rule.

If this estimate is correct, one or two of the protest areas will continue to be exploited – and quite possibly attacked in force.

In the other areas, once the “raid missions” have been accomplished, the protests will sputter out : seemingly of their own accord – until next time.

A reconnaissance in force – once detected – is not a time for pious breast-beating and vows of penance :it is a time for quiet survey of our own security weaknesses , and reinforcement of important assets – here and abroad.
