Have you heard about Abdul Rahman, the Afghani apostate who’s facing a possible death penalty for having converted from Islam to Christianity? I’m thinking the Afghans need to take another look at their constitution, which is chock full of sharia law and requires that all Afghans be Muslim, or else.
Local authorities had said they thought Rahman might be mentally unfit to stand trial, but what the heck, they decided to have one anyway. It’s a bothersome formality, but they want to make sure and do everything nice and legal like.
So far, they’re not cutting Rahman a lot of slack. Afghanistan’s attorney general says he should be hanged and jail employee Hosnia Wafayosofi told the Chicago Tribune: “We will cut him into little pieces.” Senior Muslim clerics also threw in their two cents worth and declared that Rahman should be killed regardless of whether a court decides to free him.
So much for winning hearts and minds in a backward Muslim country. Diplomats say the Afghan government, concerned about its international image, is searching for a way to drop the case. But if they do, given local sentiment, they might as well issue written invitations to Afghan extremists to paralyze the country with senseless riots.
It’s a bit disheartening, not to mention infuriating, to think that all we replaced the Taliban with is Taliban-lite.
