Abortion rights groups ,including the National Organization of Women, refuse to support Democratic challenger Bob Casey in his bid to defeat Rick Santorum because Casey is pro-life. If this turns out to be a close race, which I expect it will, this refusal to endorse Casey could very well wind up being deciding factor if it succeeds in causing the more left -wing voters in the state to vote for a third party candidate, if one comes into the race, or abstain from voting for either candidate.
The National Organization for Women Political Action Committee and Feminist Majority PAC on Wednesday announced that they will support Pennsylvania Democratic senatorial candidate Alan Sandals, who supports abortion rights, in the May primary against Democratic candidate state Treasurer Robert Casey (D), who opposes abortion rights, The Hill reports (Allen, The Hill, 3/22).
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee recruited Casey — who announced his candidacy in March 2005 — to run against Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), who also opposes abortion rights, in the November election. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) has endorsed Casey, who is expected to defeat Democratic opponents Chuck Pennacchio and Sandals in the primary. Casey has said he opposes abortion rights with exceptions for cases involving rape or incest or to save the life of the pregnant woman (Kaiser Daily Women’s Health Policy Report, 3/14).
