Sour grapes

I was struck by this quote  today by Duke University’s shooting guard JJ Redick regarding the LSU basketball team:

“LSU has guys underneath to make up for so many mistakes on the perimeter,” said Duke’s J.J. Redick, who was stopped cold by the Tigers last week in the Atlanta Regional.

Talk about damning with faint praise. Would it be so hard for Redick to complement LSU on kicking Duke’s butts when they played, instead of making a backhanded complement as he did? Wouldn’t that be the sportsmanlike thing to do?
