The average person, having little understanding of statistical analysis and none at all of the perils of hasty generalizations and inductive fallacies, starts trying to “profile” like Hal did, and gets it mostly wrong. They then excuse their obscenely high failure rate on the grounds that it’s “for the protection of my wife and children”. This sort of thinking leads to lynch mobs and rioting.
