This Illinois lawmaker has no clue
According to a new bill being worked on in the Illinois state legislature, driving without insurance will now be punishable by a fine of a hundred dollars and losing your license for three months.
The Illinois House voted 97-0 to approve legislation Tuesday to crackdown on uninsured drivers.
Under the proposal, motorists convicted of driving without insurance could lose their license for up to three months. After that time, they would have to pay $100 to get it back.
If the driver is convicted of driving without insurance during the initial suspension, they could lose their driving privileges for another six months.
It all sounds very reasonable, until we get this bizarre comment from Democratic state representive Eddie Washington.
Some lawmakers are concerned the fines and price of insurance would place too large of a financial burden on some people.
“I think we have to be mindful of who we’re helping and who we’re hurting,” said state Rep. Eddie Washington, D-Waukegan.
If the penalty for driving without insurance is too low, there won’t be an adequate incentive not to do it. This representitive seems to think that car insurance is overly expensive. Even if that were true, you can’t allow people driving to not be insured, and you can’t be an apologist for those people by claiming that car insurance costs too much. In fact, the cost of auto insurance might actually decrease if this legilation was passed. All good reasons to support the bill.
