When dealing in social issues, remember that sex of the speaker is of no consequence. Ignore the lips. Watch only what the feet are doing and where they are going. The fact is simple: The New York V-Day event is not about doing things to reduce “all” domestic violence regardless of the sex of the victim. The event is solely focused on men’s violence against women, in an effort to dirty fathers day. In particular, the political goal of this event is to maintain status quo with regard to VAWA, which ensures that the system only protects victims of abuse when the victim is a woman.

Eve Ensler is a first-degree man hater. Her writings, which are the centerpiece of the New York event, make this perfectly clear for all to see. Anybody who says that a feminist V-Day event is equalitarian is lying.

A number of progressive men and women have criticized recent trends in feminism. I spent a long time criticizing Gloria Steniem after I heard her speak 2 years ago. Nonethless, I think you mischaracterize what this rally was about.

Reading the website I can’t see how you concluded that it was “an event that only blames men for domestic violence, and pretends that women are always the victims.” Even if some of the speakers do advocate “gender feminism”, that doesn’t mean that they are “man-haters” or “supporters of child sexual predation”. I have listened to a number of feminists talk about violence against women. They usually spend as much time blaming women’s behavior as men’s behavior. They talk about how relationships can lead to violence if the woman has a low self-image or thinks about herself in certain ways. They don’t just blame the men–they are primarily interested in transforming women’s attitudes so they won’t become victims of violence. And they don’t say that women should become violent in turn toward their male partners. They advocate resolution of problems thought mutual respect and negotiation.

There are lots of reasons to disagree with modern feminism, but we don’t have to misrepresent their position to do it.

Sorry, but it is not possible to make VAWA or the VDAY event in New York appear equalitarian simply by pointing out that a few radical feminist men happen to be participating in the event.

I have met many radical feminist men over the years, who usually make their living destroying other men. These men are often lawyers, judges, psychologists, or psychiatrists. One of them, a psychologist, is Warren Farrell — who once was Vice President of New York N.O.W. His job was to always blame the husband for all marital disagreements in the counseling sessions he did. But Warren finally realized what he was doing, could not stand it any more, and ended up leaving the “dark side” to write several best sellers about radical feminism, including “The Myth of Male Power”.

Holding an event that only blames men for domestic violence, and pretends that women are always the victims, is about as sick as holding an event that only blames blacks for crime. Neither is acceptable in America. Ignorance does not make it acceptable either.

The only thing that matters is principles. It is quite clear what V-Day stands for. These are principles that no fair minded human being can buy in to.

This is a patently ridiculous charge. I’m not even sure how anyone could take this seriously. Many of the speakers at this event are male and many of them are fathers. Edward Albee, Tariq Ali, Michael Cunningham, Ariel Dorfman, Michael Eric Dyson, Dave Eggers, Nicholas Kristof, and Howard Zinn obviously didn’t think that they were participating in a “hysterical public lynching of husbands and fathers”. Nicholas Kristof is a leading neo-conservative–hardly the type of person who would speak at a rally with “man-haters” and “supporters of child sexual predation”.

These are proud males who are standing up and saying that they are against violence against women. That message if very different from say that women are superior to men.

Frankly I don’t know any feminists who think that women are superior to men–even among my lesbian friends. I have friends who read gender feminist theorists and argue that women are better negotiators, better peace makers, and better at communication, but I have never heard a single one of my feminist friends argue that women are superior to men or that women should try to make themselves superior.
