A Prayer for Fathers
Happy Fathers day to all of the readers of mensNewsDaily!
I found this prayer written by General Douglas MacArthur 6 years ago while I was going through my divorce. I printed a copy of it and I carry it in my wallet and have it tacked up on the board of my desk with the pictures of my three children around it. Not a day goes by that I don’t read the prayer silently before I begin my day.
Producing children is easy, any schmuck with his schmeckle in his hand can do it, but being a father is one of the most difficult jobs in the world.
I wasn’t the greatest dad in the world. As a Corrections officer for the MDOC, I found myself succumbing to depression and alcoholism.Â
Since leaving the MDOC I have become divorced, BUT did sober up and have made alot of positive changes in my life.Â
I have a better relationship with my younger son because of those changes, but my older son, the repair of the pain caused by the divorce and my alcoholism has been a little slower. I just hope that he knows that despite our differences and conflicts, I love him with all my heart and think about him every single day. No matter where he goes in life, or what he does, I will always love him and my other two children.
I love my children with all my heart and soul as any father should, I hope that the legacy that I pass on too my children is that loving and caring for the people around you, forgiveness and a belief in G-d makes you much more a man then any amount of physical strength does.
On this Fathers Day, I hope all of you find as much comfort in this prayer as I do.
A FATHER’S PRAYER
Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know Thee ?and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.
Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper, have not lived in vain.
