Peruvian President to be Inaugurated

The inauguration in the capital, Lima, is to be attended by the presidents of Bolivia (Evo Morales), Colombia (Alvaro Uribe), Brazil (Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva), Chile (Michelle Bachellet) and Ecuador (Alfredo Palacio), among others.

The United States is being represented by Trade Minister Carlos Gutierrez.

Mr. Garcia’s first term as president ran from 1985 to 1990 but ended with the Peruvian economy in shambles. He has assured voters that he has learned from his mistakes and will not repeat them.

Mr. Garcia supports free trade with the United States and promises to continue many of the economic policies of outgoing President Alejandro Toledo.

On Thursday, the president-elect announced his new government, naming women to head six of 16 cabinet ministries.

Women will lead the ministries of women’s affairs, the interior, foreign commerce, labor, justice, transportation and communications.
