Annan Says Syria to Patrol Border with Lebanon, Help Enforce Arms Embargo

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says Syria will increase patrols along the Lebanese border in an attempt to prevent the flow of arms to the Hezbollah militant group.

Following talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus Friday, Mr. Annan said Syria promised to “take all necessary measures” to implement the U.N. resolution that ended the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

He said Syria would establish mechanisms with the Lebanese army, including possible joint border patrols, to set up an effective interdiction program. The U.N. secretary general said he also discussed the release of the abducted Israeli soldiers that started the fighting, as well as the release of Lebanese prisoners detained by Israel.

From Syria, Mr. Annan flew to Qatar. He will travel to Iran Saturday for two days of talks with Iranian officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
