A senior Iraqi official says security forces are close to capturing or killing al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri.
Iraqi officials Sunday released a video that shows Masri instructing insurgents how to make a car bomb. National Security Advisor Mouwafak al-Rubaie said Masri’s days are numbered.
Meanwhile, Iraqi officials lifted a curfew that shut down the Iraqi capital for more than a day. There was no official explanation for the curfew, which was put in place late Friday, and kept the streets empty Saturday.
Iraq imposed the curfew after the capture Friday of a man believed to be planning suicide car bomb attacks in Baghdad’s Green Zone, which houses government, diplomatic and military offices.
The suspect is a bodyguard of Sunni Arab politician Adnan al-Dulaymi and was captured during a raid on al-Dulaymi’s residence. The politician has not been implicated in the alleged plot.
Separately, the U.S. military announced Sunday that two American soldiers were killed in combat in al Anbar province on Saturday.
