Fighting between two rival Palestinian factions has broken out in the Gaza Strip, triggered by protests over unpaid government wages and the deadlock on forming a unity government.
Four people were reported killed and dozens wounded in violence in Gaza City and the town of Khan Younis.
The clashes appeared to begin after Hamas security forces tried to stop protests by policemen demanding overdue salaries from the Hamas-led government. Fatah gunmen loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas later overran the empty Palestinian Cabinet building, setting some rooms on fire.
Meanwhile, Israel’s army chief said the Israeli military is considering a broader ground offensive in the Gaza Strip to try to stop Palestinian militants from firing rockets into Israel.
He spoke hours after an Israeli airstrike killed one Palestinian and wounded at least three others in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.
