All: This is my halloween attempt to scare the dickens out of everyone. There is a bit of Orson Welles in all of us. It is a great little ditty, most fit for Halloween, that has apparently been around for a very long time. It is also an exquisite example how historical revisionists work.

Of course, I did not write this. However, I did correct a few typos. If you cannot figure out what it is, read it aloud to your children and they will tell you what it is.

Happy Halloween!

Now, for the requisite citation of authorities …..

1. [Anomalous]. Does anyone know the true origin of this strangeness? It was sent to us by Wylie Wilson, Long Beach, California, xeroxed from Language in America (1970, World Publishing Company); whose author, Charlton Laird footnotes: “This tale exists in many forms because many people have had fun contributing to it, so that it has become a bit of folklore, a communal folk production of the literate mind, if that is not a contradiction in terms. I quote it from Word Study, XXVIII, No. 5 (May, 1953),4. The editor pronounced it anonymous; it has been associated especially with the name of Professor H.C. Chase.” All we know is it is impossible to proofread. In fact, we found an error in the book (“grammer” instead of “grammar”, once). Mural: Loss of redundancy is loss of correctability.
