I'm reminded of historical alternate time novels such as Fatherland or The Difference Engine and this is one of those moments.

While it appears that a Saddam regime of 2002 to offset Iran at this point in time is desirable compared to the current situation, they are still invalid comparisons. It's possible that Saddam might been toppled over by Iran. Or that Saddam might have decided to use his new mass weapons of destruction to attack Israel. Who knows?

The "mistake" and "catastrophe" that Iraq appears to be is due precisely to the insurgents being encouraged and driven on by the western media. There are mistakes that were made, of course, including keeping the British drawn borders combining Sunni, Shiite, and Kurdish people's all forced under the same tent. "Diversity" doesn't work here. They should have been split into seperate nations and then security for each handled differently.
