Vatican Reaffirms Celibacy for Priests

God doesn’t depend on us, so its no skin off his nose if we don’t believe in Him. The other way around of course poses interesting problems – for us.

But, there’s no evidence there’s no God. Believing, without evidence, in atheism is like believing, without evidence that your car can fly. I don’t understand why people aren’t embarrassed to say they’re irrational enough to disbelieve in god…perhaps because so many others share their irrationality?

Well, belief in god, same as belief that the moon is in Cancer and you should stay home from work, is no skin off my back…unless it’s used to direct my life and influence public policy. Religion, actually, is one of the most damaging forces in the world…primitive, divisive, and deadly. I was chased around by Christian children when I was growing up and called “Dirty Jew.” If certain Middle Easterners didn’t have an irrational belief in god, we would be getting to the airport 20 minutes before the plane, and with nobody peering into our luggage and body cavities. And then, a couple of buildings a few blocks from the apartment I lived in not too long ago in New York City would still be standing. And thousands of people who worked in them who did nothing wrong other than be on time to work on 9/11/2001 would still be alive. (A friend’s husband was spared because she had a TV pitch meeting on Friday morning, and he, not she, had to take the kids to school. There are so many stories like this, yet not enough stories like this.)

So, you think I’m irrational. What’s the big deal?

The philosopher Daniel Dennett, whom I sat next to at an evolutionary psychology conference, told me that religion should be looked at as dispassionately as, say, animal husbandry.

If only people would actually think about what they believe in. The church is the most successful multinational corporation ever, and it needs people to kowtow to what it says in order to keep the money flowing in…kind of like Invasion of The Bodysnatchers with religious iconry.

To get closer to god and his people. To learn about god. What twit told you Christians are good people? Good people don’t need Jesus: bad people do.

Nice to see someone admitting that.

Why do people go to church?

There’s no evidence there’s a god, and I, frankly, don’t really worry about it. I just do my best to be a good person — along the lines of “do unto others,” and to “leave the campground better than I found it.”

I’m not trying to go to “heaven” — a place that there’s no evidence exists. I achieve immortality if I can help make the world a better place while I’m here.

That’s a reasonable assumption.

Especially since the Church’s wealth is being rapidly depleted by lawsuits alleging (and winning judgments) of pedophilia and homosexual buggery by all those chaste, “celibate” priests.

How exactly does the Church recruit young men into the priesthood these days?

Do they have a slogan?

What’s their pitch?

I’ve been told that the reason for this is so all the wealth can keep being funneled back into the church — no pesky heirs to leave it to! Nice!

People should be aware that the church is perhaps the most successful multinational corporation ever. It’s business, boys and girls. You don’t need to go to church to be a good person.
