A former Russian spy who died in an apparent poisoning signed a statement on his deathbed blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin for his death, friends said Friday.

The statement, read to reporters outside the hospital where Alexander Litvinenko died late Thursday, accused the Russian leader of having “no respect for life, liberty or any civilized value.”

“You have shown yourself to be unworthy of your office, to be unworthy of the trust of civilized men and women,” Litvinenko said in a statement read by his friend Alex Goldfarb.

“You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life.”

Goldfarb said Litvinenko had dictated the statement before he lost consciousness on Tuesday, and signed it in the presence of his wife, Marina.

It’s incredible that the west doesn’t wake up to what is really happening in Putin’s Russia. In an incredible symposium on November 17th, put on by Jamie Glazov of FrontPageMagazine.com, several distinguished Russian dissidents and defectors attempt to warn us that reality:

Here’s an interesting excerpt from Yarim-Agaev (former Russia dissident): “What do we need to know about Putin and his government? That in foreign policy, the U.S. remains for them enemy number one, and that they would support anyone who tries to undermine American power whether it be North Korea, Iran, you name it. That in domestic policy they consider their major enemies democracy, human rights, and the free market, and they will try to suppress them by all means, and to bring back under their control most parts of the former Soviet Union.”

Btw, just in case you haven’t read it, Patrick J. Buchanan has a different take on Litvenenko’s “murder.” He claims it was not in Putin’s best interest to poison Litvenenko.

I think PJB is wrong. The KGB under Putin is capable of anything, especially revenge against a former KGB agent. What is your take?
