In a biting statement sent to the Republican National Committee, English First said that it seeks to defeat the nomination of U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R- Florida) for the post of Republican National Committee General Chairman.
“Sen. Mel Martinez is Spanish for Harriett Miers — someone unqualified for the RNC chairmanship,” they wrote. Miers was President Bush’s first choice for the US Supreme Court who was forced to withdraw because of her lack of experience and her questionable conservative credentials.
  ÂÂÂ
The 165 voting members of the Republican National Committee are expected to consider the Martinez nomination on January 20, 2007.
  ÂÂÂ
“Senator Martinez is wrong on official English and wrong on amnesty for illegal aliens,” said Jim Boulet, Jr., Executive Director of English First, a grassroots organization.
“Asking Senator Martinez to run the Republican Party is like asking Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly to run Planned Parenthood.”
  ÂÂÂ
“During the 2006 election, Democratic candidates used a Senate immigration bill backed by Martinez to defeat Republican Senators in states like Missouri and Virginia,” Boulet said.
“Should Martinez win the RNC post, reporters will encourage him to do nothing but argue with his fellow Republicans about immigration and language issues.”
  ÂÂÂ
English First has launched a web site http://www.stopmartinez.com> which will enable concerned citizens to let both Republican National Committeemen from their state know of their opposition to the Martinez nomination.
