A new survey found that one reason for the higher spend by men was that they left their Christmas shopping until the last minute, newspaper Dagbladet reports. One in four men doesn’t start shopping until the last week before Christmas.

A tv ad I saw yesterday from a jewelry chain is aimed squarely at men to give diamonds “beyond her expectations.” So do I to infer that diamond jewelry of some sort is expected by wives/so’s for xmas? Men spend lavaishly because 1. they earn more and 2. it’s seen as evidence to most women of their continued value and desireabilty. In not caving in to this pressure men are suspected of being – not a good provider and/or just taking their women for granted. Is it a coincedence that 99 percent of jewerly sold is designed to be worn by women? I think not. That women are better shoppers depends largely on whose money they are spending.
