This year I’ve covered stories that chronicle the worst of humanity: The Iraq war, acts of terrorism, corruption in Congress, genocide in Darfur and Britney Spear’s naked vagina.
But as the year draws to a close, I’d thought I’d get in the holiday spirit and write a feel-good essay.
From E Canada Now:
A study by a University of Virginia neuroscientist has revealed that happily married women who are feeling stress show recorded signs of immediate relief when they hold their husband’s hand, which brain scans could clearly identify.
When we want to inflict pain and suffering we ball our hands into fists and unleash our fury on a fellow human being. But those same instruments of violence can be used to caress our loved ones and bring them comfort and relief from stress.
There is nothing more heartwarming than watching an elderly couple walking hand-in-hand — it speaks of the enduring power of love. Lust and infatuation quickly consumes itself, but true love is an eternal flame.
It doesn’t take much effort to be a blessing to your spouse or significant other, you don’t have have to put a diamond ring on her finger — simply hold her hand.
Holding hands is a perfect picture of unity: Two distinct personalities joined together in a gesture of love and companionship.
I must close on a disheartening note, I find it troubling that the study didn’t consider what effect holding hands has on men. Mens’ feelings are also important; we are not robots, but made of flesh and blood.
I’ve written many essays that have made folks ball their hands in rage; I hope this one will inspire couples to hold hands and count their blessings.
