He was one of the five priests who ran the place. He was a tall (very), thin (very) Irish fellow in his middle years; very gentle in speech. It was a large school, co-ed, and the main discipline was for the boys; a strap. The girls didn't get corporal punishment. After every lesson period - usually about 45 minutes - there would be a line of boys from all over the school, outside his office door, waiting their turn. Sometimes there would be twenty or thirty boys. One at a time we would file in, hold our hands out and get six whacks on each. It could take him 30 of the next 45 minute period to get through all the whackings. We didn't cry even though the pain was quite severe. Father Moran used to cry for us as he whacked. We often talked about what awful crime he must have committed to be given such a task. Most of his day was spent whacking lads and crying. It put a great many lads off ever becoming priests, I can tell you!
