I have CD's that were burned in 1998. They can still be read and the files can still be copied off of them. I figure that as long as they last longer than me, that is long enough.

CDs/DVDs do not last forever. The standard I have come to rely on is to reburn a copy every 7 years. Always keep your disks sealed; moisture is their biggest enemy.

Now I have to add the word "reburn" to an online dictionary since it should be a legitimate word.

Burn your stuff on to CD-Roms on a regular basis and store the CDs.
They last forever.

You can even make stamps interesting, Joyanna -- now that's a terrific accomplishment! But that's not why you're my hero... it's that you could actually tweak a postal employee and walk out not looking like swiss cheese that makes you special.

I share your love of Reagan, as do many. He's the only person who I never met who died and I felt as if a close member of the family left us.

Anyway, the previous comment by amfortas is dead on... keep this stuff in hard copy. It's timeless and classic, and it's a joy to read your work.

I hope you are collecting hard copies of your articles, Joyanna. Keeping them in plasicky envelopes for view-but-not-touch mint condition. (what an awful sentence!). Whatever you do, don't hold them on your hard drive lest it spins into oblivion, nor on a disc that will become obsolete in 5 years. (You definitly can't rely on the ISP or even MND/Blogwonks to hold them forever). Your great-grand-daughters will be able to discover them in their bindings in a dusty attic in a few generations and get a fresh idea about their crusty old ancestor and know why she was so well liked even by strangers.

(I wonder what language they will use, these descendants of yours. Spanish, Chinese, Gudjurati?)
