Should Pat Robertson Be Stoned To Death For Making False Prophecies?

In Biblical times prophets were sometimes honored, sometimes reviled, but they were respected by the Israelites.

A prophet could really kill a party: “Thou must not dance before golden idols” would not go over very well in a party honoring Baal.

But prophets were perceived as ”messengers of God” and only a fool would dare speak against them. Just ask the children who were torn apart by bears for making fun of the prophet Elisha’s bald pate.

Taking up the mantle of a prophet was never done on a lark. The prophet was purporting to speak for Jehovah and the penalty for a wrong prognostication was death.

“But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.” — Deut. 18:20.

You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously.” –Deut. 18:21-22

An Old Testament prophet who made a prophecy that didn’t come to pass couldn’t get away with saying, “My Bad”. Jehovah was infallible and his prophets who were uttering his prophecies could not make a single mistake.

Fast forward to the 21st century and let me introduce you to modern day prophet, Pat Robertson.

From the Associated Press:

“The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election. Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. In 2005, Robertson predicted that Bush would have victory after victory in his second term. He said Social Security reform proposals would be approved and Bush would nominate conservative judges to federal courts.

Lawmakers confirmed Bush’s 2005 nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. But the president’s Social Security initiative was stalled.”

From the Associated Press:

“Pat Robertson said Tuesday God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would result in “mass killing” late in 2007.“I’m not necessarily saying it’s going to be nuclear,” he said during his news-and-talk television show “The 700 Club” on the Christian Broadcasting Network. “The Lord didn’t say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.”

Pat Robertson is a failure as a prophet, not all of his predictions come to pass. Pat Robertson is always preaching that we must be faithful to the teachings of the Bible. He often quotes Old Testament verses that condemn homosexuals to death.

Jehovah doesn’t pussyfoot around, he expects his prophets never to be wrong in their predictions. And as we have seen the penalty for a wrong prediction is death. Shouldn’t Pat Robertson be stoned to death for uttering false prophecies?

Pat Robertson was quick to call for the assasination of the great leader Hugo Chavez; he doesn’t deserve any mercy from his fellow born-againers.

I’m not really serious about Pat Robertson being put to death, but at the very least he should shut the hell up.

The Hugo remark about him being a great leader is irrelevant to the message of my essay. Care to comment on my point that Pat Robertson is a hypocrite and a failure as a prophet? And that he should be hoisted by his own petard?

One is hoisted ON a petard, not with it. Basically a petard is – (and I only say because last time I mentioned something almost everyone knows about you insisted I explain for those who don’t)- a plank.

On the plank there would be an explosive charge, usually for breaking through castle walls. One hauled or pushed the plank up the wall by one means or another until it was at the place one wanted the resultant hole. The ‘engineer’ (as the demo guys of the day were called) who placed the charges had to be quick getting off the plank when the time came to get it into position.

I like the stoning idea though RPR. Unfortunately I am not without sin.

Still, who cares. Gimme a stone. This Robertson fellow is a plank.

From the quotes you have provided, Pat does not seem to claim to be speaking for god with the exception of the “terrorist attack in 2007″ quote. Since that one has yet to come to pass, it’s a little early to break out the blazing faggots for a preacher roasting party.

If the 2007 quote fails to come to pass, and the quote is accurate, then Pat would indeed be a false prophet. The other predictions seem to me, from reading your article, to be pat speaking in his own voice, not gods.

Amfortas, that was a typo on my part. I corrected it to read: hoisted by his OWN petard.

And that is how Wikipedia stats it also:

    Hoisted by his own petard

The word remains in modern usage in the phrase to be hoisted by one’s own petard, which means “to be harmed by one’s own plan to harm someone else” or “to fall in one’s own trap”. Shakespeare coined the now proverbial phrase in Hamlet.

In the following passage, the “letters” refer to instructions (written by his uncle Claudius, the King) to be carried sealed to the King of England, by Hamlet, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern, the latter being two schoolfellows of Hamlet. The letters, as Hamlet suspects, contain a death warrant against Hamlet, who will later open and modify them to instead request the execution of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Enginer refers to a military engineer.

There’s letters seal’d: and my two schoolfellows,
Whom I will trust as I will adders fang’d,
They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
    And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For ’tis the sport to have the enginer
Hoist with his own petar; and ‘t shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon: O, ’tis most sweet,
When in one line two crafts directly meet.

Dr. Damage, indeed Pat Robertson usually claims to hear directly from God when he makes his predictions.

If you believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God, and is to be interepred literally, I hope you are gathering stones. Because most assuredly Robertson’s prediction will not come true.

I’d be curious as to whether he did in the instances that you cite where his predictions have failed.

“If you believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God, and is to be interepred literally, I hope you are gathering stones

Christians have more than merely the old testament to draw on. When Christ calls on he who is without sin to cast the first stone, he was speaking of an adulterous woman. The old testament also calls for stoning for her offense, yet Christ, who is without sin, refused to cast the first stone also. Admonishing her only to “sin no more”.

Had I an effective soapbox from which to do so, I would follow christs example and call on pat to cease passing himself off as a prophet, assuming:
    1. That predictions have failed to come to pass where he claims to speak for god
    2. That the 2007 prophecy fails to come to pass.

I’m curious though: why do you assume that the jihadi will not attack the US with a devastating attack during 2007? You’re that confident or purely because Pat said that it would?

Nice quote RPR. I’m sorry you had to scurry off to look him up. The good Bard oft’ play’d with words, dropping letters to fit the line (or mere speed-writing), ‘creatively’ using the incorrect verb tense, using a noun for a verb or omiting words altogether. So the phrase “Hoist with his own petar” in proper syntax would have ‘along’ qualifying the ‘with’ as well as a d at the end of petard and the verb hoisted instead of the noun (a)hoist. But he can get away with it. Being dead lets you off a lot of these minor criticisms.

But…. Not only the OWN omitted, you said hoist BY. One would be hoist’ with (or even ‘by’) a rope or a pole ON the petard or hoist’ ALONG with his own petard. Pedantic bugger I am, godwot!

Your article refers to him as predicting “…that a terrorist attack on the United States would result in “mass killing” late in 2007

Does “mass killing” always translate as “millions” or does he refer to “millions” someplace that you haven’t quoted?

I’d call 9/11 a mass killing, yet the deaths didn’t even approach a single million, let alone multiple millions.

I rather suspect you’d consider Bush jr responsible for mass killings in Iraq, yet it’s only (in comparison to millions) in the hundreds of thousands even by the MSMs worst guestimates.

Never suggested otherwise. I half suspected as much in fact. However, IMO Pat is still safe from being guest of honor at a post 2007 barbeque provided a late 2007 terror attack achieves at least “mass killings” as the millions component of the “prophecy” (I guess we’ll see wont we) is preceded by the word “possibly”.

Also, a successful bioweapon attack could easily escalate into the millions of casualties. Fortunately, the number of states capable of supplying such weapons to terrorists is slightly smaller than it was a few years ago so they might be less willing to do so considering the greater chances that the transfer might be tracked back to themselves.

It would take balls of steel for any rogue states leader to provide terrorists with bioweapons as theres little doubt that Bush jr would respond in kind (nukes because the US claims not to posses bio or chemical weapons) should he be able to identify the source.

Long story short: you’re correct. millions of casualties are a very low order probability. Which, unfortunately, doesn’t really translate as impossible.

You are correct, he is stoned, and he lost a few stone w/ the protein shake. I amazes me that many Christians somehow feel the need to never be critical of Robertson and to rationalize the things he says and does w/ platitudes and generalities.

I learned a long time ago in a previous live how to determine when things in the bible apply to us or not. However, sometimes I prefer to allow it to remain uncertain, so that those who intentionally avoid the truth and their obligations, will not gain comfort by my words.

I’m shocked. Mr. Reyes the Hispanic Supremacist condemning a non-Hispanic for stupidity. Meanwhile his illegal alien buddies are killing American citizens and stealing tax payer money.

He praises Hugo and worships Che. Those murderers and illegal aliens don’t have to obey the law because they are Hispanic. He’d rather spend his time trash talking non-Hispanics for acting stupid. Forget about the murderers and thieves. He is the very epitome of racism.

Why is MND promoting and publishing the writings of such a blatant racist and hate mongerer? Perhaps we should ask them?

Forget about stoning Pat Robertson. I’ll settle for stoning Nancy Pelosi for making false campaign prophecies about leading a more “bipartisan” Congress.

MND generally and even reflexively opens its doors to contrarians like Robert Paul Reyes. He writes frequently on current events and he always defends his essays vigorously. To my way of thinking, that makes Mr. Reyes an ideal representative for a society that enjoys open debate and upholds the values of public elocution.

Three cheers for Mr. Reyes, for he is indeed a jolly good fellow.

    So say I.

Well guys I have to go along with Mike on that. RPR is always – well nearly always – engaging and even I, far and away the most sensible and balanced person here, can be provocative at times.

Time for another Britney article RPR. Its been a few days now. Or better still, why not do some research on what the money-grubbing entertainment business is doing to Bindi Irwin, the late Steve Irwin’s little girl. I’d like to see you sink your teeth into them.

    TheRanger said,

“the great leader Hugo Chavez”? Care to tell us why this clown is “great”?

The “clown” Chavez is respected and has tremendous influence in his sphere, Latin America.

Bush, who truly is a clown, has squandered America’s good name.

America as a result of Bush’s misadventure in Iraq has lost its influence in Europe and throughout the world.

Here’s a link that goes into detail about the great accomplishments of Hugo Chavez:

Yeah anybody who hangs out with Castro and Ahmadinejad has to be a quality guy.

He seizes private businesses and takes them over in the name of “the people” for his own use. He calls our President “Satan” on the U.N. floor. He is allowing Middle East terrorists to travel through and probably train in his country. He has taken over the church in his country.

What a “great” guy. Oh, I’m sorry. He’s Hispanic so that makes him great in your eye. Meanwhile you condemn Britney every ten minutes for not wearing underwear. I guess that is much worse than everything Hugo does.

You never learned to notice the imporant stuff did you Mr. Reyes?

The Hugo remark about him being a great leader is irrelevant to the message of my essay. Care to comment on my point that Pat Robertson is a hypocrite and a failure as a prophet? And that he should be hoisted by his own petard?
    ———
Pat Robertson is a fool and I don’t pay any attention to him and I certainly don’t need to classify him as “great” simply because he is white. Why do you seem to need to classify clowns like Hugo Chavez as “great”? Simply because they are hispanic? What has he done that makes him “great”, call George Bush names? Last time saw this “great” man was shutting down opposition newspapers, groping that smelly crackpot that runs Iran and chumming up to other nutcases running disfunctional countries. As a writer and newspaper man yourself you think someone who shuts down papers because they don’t carry a certain veiwpoint is “great”?

RPR, I checked out your link on the “great” things your hero Hugo is doing to his country. Please, this is written by another commie stooge. This is the same crap we always here about Cuba written by useful idiots who go down to visit, sing the praises of the dictator but always hop back on the plane and come back to “evil, capitalist America” to enjoy the freedoms and creature comforts capitalism provides. Blah, blah Cuba has a top notch education system the useful idiots always tell us. Well, that will go along way in the cigar factory you will be working at after you graduate from that fabulous education system communism has provided. I see the same kinds of “worker paradise” nonsense in this fawning sychophants writings toward Hugo Chavez.

Here is a short bio of Michael Parenti, the author of the article I mentioned:

Michael Parenti received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University. He has taught at a number of colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. Some of his writings have been translated into Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

During his earlier teaching career he received grants or fellowships from the Louis Rabinowitz Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Brown University, Yale University, State University of New York, and the University of Illinois. For several years he was an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C

    *********************

I seriously doubt that such prestigious organizations like Yale University, State University of New York and the Ford Foundation would hire or support a “commie stooge”.

    Robert,

Like most things that are given from the Creator, no one individual can or should be critical for obvious reasons of sheer self preservation. You know, fire from the sky and hail stones, etc…

It has also been pointed out that 2008 might have been a better time to write this thread had his claims not panned out…you’re still a bit premature with your writing, again!

    Have a great weekend..
