Toys “R” Us Reverses Decision On Baby Contest

2007-01-07
By

From the Associated Press:

“After coming under fire for denying a Chinese-American infant a $25,000 prize in a New Year’s baby contest because her mother was not a legal U.S. resident, the Toys “R” Us company said Saturday evening that it had reversed its decision.”

Baby Yuki Lin, winner of the “First Baby of the Year Sweepstakes”, will have money for her college education. Asians place a high premium on education, and chances are that Baby Yuki will grow up to be an upstanding citizen.

I’m glad that Toys “R” Us reversed its racist decision. Yuki was born in the “land of opportunity” and is therefore an American citizen and the legitimate winner of the sweepstakes.

From the Associated Press:

“Toys “R” Us, which opened its first mainland China store less than a month ago, changed its mind after Chinese-American advocates protested and the story was reported in ethnic newspapers and The New York Times among other outlets.”

It’s worth noting that Toys “R” Us managers didn’t reverse their decision because they had an epiphany that racial discrimination is wrong. They relented under protests from Chinese-American activists.

Whenever we see immigrants (documented or undocumented) being discriminated against, we must speak out in protest. We must have zero tolerance for xenophobia and racial discrimination.

I wish Baby Yuki and her parents a happy and prosperous New Year. They didn’t make a mistake coming to this great democracy; America really is the “land of opportunity”.

I’m glad they changed their mind. Even if they had had a rule stating that you had to be a citizen of the USA, the baby was born here, and she was the one who was being awarded anyway. And to be awarded a prize and then have it taken away must have been devastating! I’m glad that Yuki will have a head start on the payment of her future education!

I wish immigrants who come here would become citizens, though. I think if you are going to live in a country and reap from it, you should also contribute to it in ways that most Americans do.

I think that you wouldn’t be for it if it was a white illegal alien.

It is a farce. An the law about “born on American soil makes you an American” should be repealed – only if you are a legal US national (or in the process) should your children be citizens.

Time to kick out the riff-raff, and close the loophole.

And before deporting the mother, she should be fined $25K.

Again an illegal demanding the rules not apply to them. Once a law breaker always a law breaker.

I have to find some laws I feel inconvenient to obey.

Also, why hasn’t this obviously identified illegal been deported?

what is disturbing is that toys r us caved on their own rules.

it is perfectly reasonable for the rules to state that you must be a citizen of the USA before you can play.

just like the rules state that you have to be 18 to play the lotto.

it is pretty much the same thing.

having them cave in to the demands of people that are not playing by the rules just shows how much this entitlement mentality has eroded common sense.

Golly, I thought this brewhaha was about an immigration scofflaw. I didn’t even know what “race”

I suppose if one is only looking for the most eeeevil sounding accolade to convince everyone “the sky is falling”, or perhaps “the theater is on fire”, then there’s no need for an English dictionary.

Robert, is it racist for other countries to impose restrictions on whether I can visit their soil, how long I can stay, what I can do while I am there etc?
You are welcome to try and guess my race as you formulate your answer.
The U.S. did not invent the concept of citizenship. Citizenship is a useful legal concept. There are benefits and responsibilities alike with citizenship. There are legal paths to citizenship and one of the least mentioned parties injured by illegal immigration are those who have followed those legal paths only to see criminals go to the head of the line.
MLK spoke eloquently about a day when people would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. The person who breaks the law shows poor character; irrespective of race. They are poor candidates for citizenship.

Chinese and hispanic folks alike make great Americans; they have a rich culture, strong work ethic and great cuisine. But liars, cheaters, frauds and general scumbags need not apply.

Hi Robert – Can you give the rest of us a liberal view point on how we should decide which laws we should follow? Should we follow any laws? Or do you think it should be survival of the fittest? If you think that laws are meaningless do you advocate the rape, stealing from or killing of those that are an inconvenient to someone else? My conservative view is that laws are needed to have civilization and if you don’t like the laws you have to work to change them, not break them. I think if someone does break the laws they should be prosecuted to protect the rest of us and civilization. My Conservative view is that with out the rule of law you have anarchy.

For the millions of hardworking undocumented workers: Amnesty and a path to citizenship.

For the few who have committed serious crimes: Prosecution.

For those who have committed less serious crimes: Deportation

Then change the law to allow millions of Mexicans and Latin Americans to immigrate here legally.

Your racism shows more every time you write.

THIS is who Americans want to legally immigrate:

    http://www.nysun.com/article/46171

These people actually CONTRIBUTE to the benefit of all Americans. They create jobs and generate wealth.

Most of the people you advocate allowing to immigate are from a very poor impoverished past and can’t contribute – more often they just drag the system down with welfare, foodstamps, AFDC, on and on and on – and impose higher taxes on the rest of us that actually have jobs.

We don’t want’em reyes. We want the Indians, and the Czechs and the Koreans and the Chinese that actually are educated, and willing to speak English.

The main thing that the Mexicans have contributed to our society is the lowering our wages. This doesn’t help we individuals, but does help corporate america keep their costs down. Hmmm…wonder who supporting the illegal immigration invasion?

I suggest that we americans pick just one corporation that is using illegal immigrants and everyone boycott their products until they go out of business. One by one, we’ll keep breaking them until they are all gone. What! You say eliminate all of our jobs? Yep, and it would shut down the US government too. But, at least while we’re starving, we won’t be up to our eyeballs in Mexicans and we won’t be paying anymore taxes. Let’s just call it the Sampson Option.

This is not true, there are strict quotas in place. Only a few thousand are allowed to immigrate from Mexico to America each year.

If a Mexican follow the rules and applies for immigration to America, on the average, he would have to wait for well over a decade.

Congress has refused to raise the meager quota, so of course Mexicans will simply cross the border.

Good God man. You really should get out more often. The engineers that keep this website up and running, and your blog, are likely Indians…and very very NOT likely mexican.

High tech is laced with Indians and Czechs and Slovokians and Hungarians.

Mexican immigrants are a great asset to this country:

“A new study finds that recent Mexican immigrants in Chicago possess a wealth of artistic, cultural, and networking assets and that those assets contribute to the social, cultural and economic well being of many Chicagoland neighborhoods, organizations and institutions.

In fact, the artistic and cultural activities of Mexican immigrants who arrived in Chicago after 1994 stimulate the local economy, especially in the music industry and service sector.

So say the authors of the new “Creative Networks: Mexican Immigrant Assets in Chicago” study, which is a joint project of The (Chicago) Field Museum’s Center for Cultural Understanding and Change (CCUC) and the Science of Networks in Communities (SONIC) research group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Rockefeller Foundation funded the yearlong study through its Creativity and Culture Program. The geographical areas the researchers began with were the West Chicago suburbs, including Aurora; South Chicago; Pilsen and Little Village; the West Corridor; Albany Park; and the North Side. Later, the researchers incorporated comments from Mexican immigrants throughout the city.

The research team’s findings will be released during an event for the news media at The Field Museum on Nov. 14. A Web site showcasing the research findings will be introduced during the event.

“Mexican immigrants help to build up the rich, vibrant life and character of our city,” said Alaka Wali, director of the CCUC and one of the study’s primary investigators. “They make significant contributions that lead to growth, both economic and cultural.”

Hmmm, using your racial feminist logic then; I can go out and bang any and all lesbians that I see. I don’t like nor care for the law (called rape) that says that I cannot so i’ll just ignore it. And my choice of lesbians is because the may still be virgins and I like it better and it’s better than some tatoo’d skank. You know, grass…. greener ‘en all….

no? What!?? Was that offensive? I am just exercising my right for a better life! You know, I want good clean womenfolks to pass on my genes! And lots of em!

reyes – i appreciate the post. but once again, you are talking about the very bottom rung of society, or lower.

why do you think it important to import poverty in to our country? do you think americans are impressed by or drawn to that?

    get real!

the link you posted just reinforces what has been stated here. these illegal immigrant people contribute almost nothing, except to their own cultural pockets within a city. they do NOT create jobs or wealth. They do NOT file for patents. They do NOT create corporations.

furthermore – hispanic culture is NOT a culture of education. this just leads to more poverty and under achievement and more tax burdon to those of us that work.

would you like me to post some academic performance data by race??
