Interesting article Denis, as well as amfortas' reply.

Notice that it was "Dr." Jekyll which turned into something "evil;" "Mr." Hyde, and masculine "Mr.".
Doctors are pure, or innocent in a general sense. Somewhat like Police Officers, or Priests, et al.

So, although "men" can be Doctors, Police Officers, Priests, etc. What runs through their veins is PURE evil just waiting for the moment to come out.

This has become a systemic theme throughout popular culture now. No matter how pure, good, or innocent the man may "seem" to be on the outside. Evil, violent, and masculinity which are by now synonymous runs through their veins.

Popular culture showing time, and time again men are only capable of a thin venner of goodness.

Popular culture now delights in portraying men as basically amoral, sub-human, inadequate creatures which need to be have special treatment by our criminal and family court systems for the safety of all women and children.

After all "women" and "children" need to be protected from all men. Hence, the gender non inclusive VAWA Violence Against Womens Act. Although studies have show women to abuse men at the same rate, as men do women. As for the letter of the law, women do not abuse only men do. Why, because women are good, men are evil, silly?

Mr. Hyde, a neanderthal characteristic, eh? You don't go quite far enough, Denise, in your descriptions, explanations and speculations. Take your opening as an example: - a tale that could only have originated in the milieu in which it was written, the Victorian era, with its strong insistence on public propriety and rigid sexual repression.

You could easily have added, and added to the tone of the focus, - the Victorian Era dominated by a repressed matriarchal Queen who whilst publicly revered, privately enslaved her own daughter and carried on an affair with a servant, denying him even a vestige of recognition of his manhood.

I would hazard that these items also add to the notion of the Jekyll and Hyde character. How much of Neanderthal WOMAN seeped into the era, I wonder. How much did this affect the rise of feminism? Maybe that explains the 'humourous' adaptations of 'Sister Hyde' et al.
