(reprint from earlier MND post)
Most liberals regard illegal aliens as “Undocumented Democrats” and a veritable gold mine of opportunity for holding on to political power by coddling to those here unlawfully.
For that reason, most Democrat politicians have abandoned reasonable concern about homeland security, preservation of American language and culture, and the stability of the American economy and social order in order to curry favor with Hispanics, the ethnic group with the greatest number of illegal aliens in the United States.
One can search high and low to unearth a liberal with a patriotic, pro-America stance on illegal immigration. That search will usually be futile, but there is a notable exception.
The exception is a U.S. Senator who has shown remarkable wisdom, foresight, and clarity, especially for a Democrat. His office released the following statements (in bold) concerning illegal immigration:
“In response to increased terrorism and abuse of social programs by aliens, (I) today introduced the first and only comprehensive immigration reform bill in Congress. Currently, an alien living illegally in the United States often pays no taxes but receives unemployment, welfare, free medical care, and other federal benefits. Recent terrorist acts, including the World Trade Center bombing, have underscored the need to keep violent criminals out of the country.”
The senator’s bill, titled the “Immigration Stabilization Act,” overhauls the nation’s immigration laws, and calls for a massive scale-down of immigrants allowed into the country. The bill also changes asylum laws to prevent phony asylum seekers.
The senator said the U.S. open door policy is being abused at the expense of honest, working citizens.
The senator continued:
“We are a country founded upon fairness and justice. An individual in real threat of torture or long-term incarceration because of his or her political beliefs can still seek asylum. But this bill closes the door to those who want to abuse America’s inherent generosity and legal system.”
“Our borders have overflowed with illegal immigrants placing tremendous burdens on our criminal justice system, schools and social programs. The Immigration and Naturalization Service needs the ability to step up enforcement. Our federal wallet is stretched to the limit by illegal aliens getting welfare, food stamps, medical care, and other benefits often without paying any taxes.”
“Safeguards like welfare and free medical care are in place to boost Americans in need of short-term assistance. These programs were not meant to entice freeloaders and scam artists from around the world. Even worse, Americans have seen heinous crimes committed by individuals who are here illegally.”
Specific provisions proposed by the senator in the Immigration Stabilization Act include:
* Reduces annual legal immigration levels. Relatives other than spouse or minor children admitted only if already on immigration waiting lists and their admission does not raise annual immigration levels above approved level.
* Reforms asylum rules to prevent aliens from entering the United States illegally under phony “asylum” claims.
* Expands list of felonies considered “aggravated” felonies requiring exclusion and deportation of criminal aliens. Allows courts to order deportation at time of sentencing.
* Increases penalties for failing to depart or re-entering the United States after a final order of deportation order. Increases maximum penalties for visa fraud from five years to 10 years.
* Curtails alien smuggling by authorizing interdiction and repatriation of aliens seeking to enter the United States unlawfully by sea. Increases penalties for alien smuggling.
* Adds “alien smuggling” to the list of crimes subject to sanctions under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
* Expands the categories of property that are forfeited when used to facilitate the smuggling or harboring of illegal aliens.
* Clarifies that a person born in the United States to an alien mother who is not a lawful resident is not a U.S. citizen. This will eliminate incentive for pregnant alien women to enter the United States illegally, often at risk to mother and child, for the purpose of acquiring citizenship for the child and accompanying federal financial benefits.
* Mandates that aliens who cannot demonstrably support themselves without public or private assistance are excludable. This will prevent admission of aliens likely to be dependent on public financial support. This requirement extends to the sponsor of any family sponsored immigrant.
* Increases border security and patrol officer positions.
So, you ask, what sort of a Democrat would take such a politically incorrect–
but morally and legally correct—stance?
Perhaps the Democrat with a brain is Zell Miller from the great state of
Georgia? Or could it be a reincarnation of Alabama’s late firebrand, George
Wallace?
The answer is: None of the above!
In fact, Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) introduced the Immigration
Stabilization Act in the United States Senate in 1993. The statements quoted
above are from a press release issued by Reid’s office on August 5, 1993.
How is it that Harry Reid was exactly right more than thirteen years
ago, but is so completely wrong now? Why would Reid oppose programs
he once sponsored now that the problem is seven times greater in scope and
after the 9/11 attacks?
Just last spring, while the U.S. Senate was debating legislation
to make English the official U.S. language, Reid saw fit to drag out the R
word—racist—to slander those supported the English bill.
And, of course, Reid voted for Mexico and against America when
the U.S. Senate voted for amnesty on May 25, 2006.
Harry Reid: Against illegal immigration before he was for it!
Why?

Hold the phones there, Stevie! “Republican” as in RINO as in turncoat as in phat swine gorging on the blood of the American macacas to keep that cheap, cheap labor rolling so the lettuce can keep growing? Now who would’ve ever guessed that Georgy and the RINO’s could harmonize so swimmingly with the Dirty Demos? Came as a huge surprise, absolutely shocking an’ all.
Now why do you think ol’ George bought the Demons two big houses on the hill? Did I hear someone say, “Amnesty?” Yes! By George, that’s correct. You mean the RINO wanted the Demons to win? You’re getting very warm–hot even. Why? Because it’s a one party system. It’s Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton, maybe a Bonohead or two thrown in to shake things up, then… well, then it’s someone who’s a carbon copy of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton. Keep that in mind and you’ll never be disappointed when they lift up the bowl and–voila–no pea! One party, hollow men, empty skirts, oink oink, little, medium, and big pigs rolling in the slop. Some branded “D,” some “R.” No diff.
Well, not entirely. You see, with the Republicrats still in charge of the House and Senate, it was going to be hard for Mr. Mush do shove his Amnesty down America’s throat. He couldn’t have done better than put into power those paragons of virtue who’re finally gonna clean up the trash, by golly–the Democans–to assist in folding America into the global batter. Mmmm Mmmm! Delic! albeit costly–as in “that’ll be one U.S. Constitution and a Bill of Rights, please.” Now, John is just pointing out how bang on the money Mr. Mush was to get the Democans on his side. Gotta hand it to George. Pretty smart dude! I mean, is there anyone who can beat the Democrats for their hatred of America a la Kerry and Murtha comparing our soldiers to Nazis and saying they are breaking into Iraqi homes with bloodlust at night? Is there any party more dedicated to the balkanization (Black-American, Mexican-American, Eskimo-American, Gay-American, Lesbian-American—anything but good ol’ American) than the Democratic Party? Is there anyone more committed to the perversion of everything that’s been in American blood since it’s birth (like homosexual marriage, homosexual divorce, homosexual separation, homosexual sex, homosexual-lesbian relations, breaking apart children and parents (Think Hillary–she championed giving kids the right to sue parents. Or think the Ginsburger. ACLU chieftess. Wanted to replace Father’s and Mother’s day with Parents’ day–one more pebble removed from the road to the dissolution of the family.)) And is there any party more committed to making the U.S. look more like the turd world than that party? C’mon, it’s their anthem. At least the Republicrats have Tancredo within their ranks. Opposes Amnesty all the way. Today, not fifteen years ago. Others in the Publican ranks as well, who are very and vocally opposed to Bush the RINO’s and the Democratic Party’s Amnesty plan.
It’s a fine line these days, I’ll admit. But I’ve heard some, and more than one, prominent Republicans say that open borders and illegal immigration are bad, bad, bad. I’ve never heard one prominent Democrat say that. So, while the waters are muddier than ever, the score is still in favor of the Republicrats. They also get points for (Bush’s) shamelessly and often saying “God” (as opposed to (Clinton’s) shamelessly and often saying “Ohhhhhhh gaaaawwdd!”)

I was for the Democrats until they sold-out America for Mexican illegal alien votes. Just like I am against Republicans who do the same.
The issue is clear–as difficult as it is to admit it, Harry Reid was exactly right in 1993.
But then a strange thing happened that changed Reid’s mind. It was called the Republican Revolution of 1994. Congress in the hands of the GOP and all of that.
Harry realized that all his pro-American rhetoric in 1993 with regard to illegal aliens was not such a great idea for those who wanted to stay in power. Harry realized that Democrats needed illegal aliens—not to pick fruit or clean house, but to vote!
And jtaup is right on about Republicans being the only ones speaking against amnesty. The house GOP
saved America in 2006–can they do it again in 2007?

Anyone who thinks the destruction of the United States Of America, which we are sitting on our hands, and doing nothing to stop, is about “votes” is either blind or stupid.
We are being lead into the abyss by a gaggle of manchurian candidates who have bigger fish to fry than getting “votes”. Neither democRATS, nor republiCAN’TS give a hoot in hell about “votes”. Hell, they can use their propaganda machine (hollywood and “the media”) to swing the “vote” any way they chose, and if we happen to not get it right, well they have the Supreme Court (sic) to get it right for them.
They only want power for their true constituancies, which is NOT the American people. The puppet masters for both parties are the same… Powerful, Corporate Globalists using communism, socialism, political correctness, and swat teams to disarm and subjugate the last bastion of indiviual freedom on earth.

Well, I agree with your third paragraph, relay. But I’d have to say, they still need votes–maybe not of actual citizens–to have power.
This video puts it in perspective (Roy Beck’s “Immigration by the Numbers”). Don’t drink any coffee, and remove all sharp or heavy objects from the area before watching. Screaming and cursing encouraged.

Steve, today…not fifteen years ago. I realize there aren’t very many congressman from either party going to heaven, but JL’s explanation of Reid’s amnesia is convincing. As Lt. Columbo would say, “I’m very big on motive.”
If you say there are those in the RINO ranks who think no differently, you’ll get no argument from me. But there’s a preponderance of evidence in their favor…today, I mean.
