The 12th Annual Anarchist Book Fair Begins At 11 a.m. Sharp

nullI enjoy it any time I read about an anarchist event that has set start and end times. They’ve sold out the movement before it even begins. Such appears to be the case with the 12th Annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair.

Come on now, how are we supposed to respect anarchists who stick to rigid schedules?

Personally, I don’t like my anarchy this organized.

Next year I’d suggest three things to the organizers in order to bring the movement more in line with the stated philosophy:

1) Call yourselves “disorganizers”

2) Hold it annually — seven or eight times a year

3) The location? Anywhere you damn well please — same goes for the time

This article is blatantly incorrect. It is popular to say anarchy means “no rules”, but that is quite wrong and is basically a teenager-interpretation. You can still have hierarchies with no rules (for instance, tyrants and warlords need not have rules to follow).

On the other hand, corporations and individuals can freely organize themselves without no dependence on governments or union-style hierarchies (eBay is a good example). Obviously a word can mean more than one thing, and anarchy is often merely the absence of hierarchy — it is not a universal synonym for “disorganized” as is so often claimed, any more than “blue” is a synonym for “colorblind”.

Certainly the American founders would be skeptical of someone who says “I like government”, until they are careful to specify which kind. It would be unwise to lump people together and criticize those who want freedom and chosen-rules at the same time.
