Planet Earth banning common light bulbs

They’re unwanted in Cuba, Hugo Chavez is trying to kick them out of Venezuela, Australia and Canada are on timetables to get rid of them, the European Union says they soon simply won’t be available and now the U.S. is considering new rules that effectively would ban the incandescent light bulb.

It’s a global sweep so far, triggered by worries that the invention of Thomas Edison uses too much energy or generates too much heat for the earth to tolerate, despite the reports by WND that a member of a congressional committee is challenging the “facts” used by Al Gore in his “An Inconvenient Truth” movie, saying science just doesn’t validate concerns that such factors are significant environmentally.

Now the avalanche of new bans may be hard to slow down. In a report in the Times Online, officials said directives from the European Union soon will force manufacturers to produce more efficient bulbs in greater numbers.

“We expect that legally binding eco-standards will be set for energy efficiency and therefore gradually you would only be able to buy those light bulbs that meet the target. So effectively it would phase out the inefficient ones,” the official said.

The ban plans already are being implemented in some nations, and in the United States, though it hasn’t been enacted nationally yet, several states are well on their way toward such bans, including trend-setting California as well as Connecticut, North Carolina and Rhode Island.

chiefbiggywiggy say, All plants are our brothers and sisters. They talk to us and if we listen, we can hear them.

They’ve documented on film with ultra-sensitive sound equipment that plants “cry” when we cut or eat them. I told this to a radical environmentalist/vegetarian once. She responded with great emotion, nearly crying herself: “I know … I’m considering becoming a fruitatarian!”

Well … she’s almost there … she just needs to eliminate wheat from her diet … and … and … cake pans from her kitchen.

Florescent bulbs are wonderful, I have a number of them in my house. However, they are not the be all, end all.
    1. Simply replacing every bulb in the house is a significant expense. This is not necessarily helpful for the poorest among us. They still aren’t giving them away.
    2. While yes there are florescent bulbs that work with a dimmer, they are around $12 ea at wal-mart ( last time I looked). How many years before I see payback on that? Aside from the warm fuzzy for doing my bit. I have 8 dimming bulbs in my house, $96 + Tax seems a bit much to ask. Sorry those will be replaced on an attrition basis.
    3. Not very rugged. My garage door opener destroyed one in less than a month. You should have seen the mess when my drop light fell. Previous incandescents simply stopped working, they didn’t shatter
    4. Also “decorative” florescent bulbs… still waiting for them. how about the small socket wannabe “candle flame” bulbs, who are we kidding here?
    5. The warm up time can be maddening. The Mini globes in my bathroom continue to annoy me.

Incandescent bulbs will either go away totally, or they will become a small niche product for certain applications, there is no need to legislate them away. All that is, is a group of politicians trying to play on their constituents.

Guess what? Some folks are allergic to florescent light – a lot of folks. I’m one of them. I get extremely ill. Can’t stay under such light for more than an hour. It gets worse depending upon the color schemes in the room. If the walls are blue, or yellow, or white (light colors) things are worse. If the color scheme is darker, or there is natural light also coming in, things are much better. Talk to some optometrists, etc., and ask them how common this is. I have. The answer is, very common. And then there’s all that additional mercury that will have to be handled and disposed of … and wonder why that’s not a problem for the environmentalists? Could it be that there is an agenda here that has nothing to do with concern for the environment … an agenda that the average environmentalist just can’t seem to comprehend … because they are too wrapped up in emotion? Just wondering.
