From the Associated Press:
“A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid a choir of complaining Catholics that included Cardinal Edward Egan.
The ‘My Sweet Lord’ display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan, said Matt Semler, the gallery’s creative director. Semler said he submitted his resignation after officials at the Roger Smith Hotel shut down the show.”
Christians and non-Christians alike get into the Easter spirit by eating a chocolate bunny or two.
Only an individual with warped sensibilities would choose the Holy Week to exhibit a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ.
America is religiously diverse, and we most take pains not to offend anyone’s sacred beliefs. It seems fairly obvious: Chocolate bunnies OK; Chocolate anatomically correct six-foot chocolate Jesus not OK.
I don’t believe in censorship and the artist, Cosmo Cavallaro, has the right to create controversial works of art. But why go deliberatley out of your way to offend Catholics and other Christians?
Some hail Cavallaro’s courage, but that’s hogwash. If Cavallaro wants to demonstrate his bravery, let him create a naked representation of the Prophet Muhammad. Catholics will protest by writing letters to the editor; Muslims will show their disapproval by issuing a fatwa.

Nothing brave or courageous about mocking Christian beliefs these days. Along with men/fathers, Christians are about the only other social group in this country whom it is perfectly socially acceptable to degrade and malign.

“Some hail Cavallaro’s courage, but that’s hogwash.” I have to agree with you Robert, these types of “artists” are actually very cowardly. They take symbols of Christianity and mock them because they know it’s safe to do so. They know they won’t have to face the wrath of some wild-eyed Christian maniac bent on doing them real harm. They know Christians will only yelp a little bit, but won’t stick a knife in your chest with a paper attached to it outlining your “crimes” the way it was done to Theo Van Gogh by a practitioner of the “religion of peace”, Islam.

All I can say is, what a waste of a lot of good chocolate. Instead of making it into the naked Jesus, they should have distributed it to all the needy women out there who don’t get enough of it. Which is most of us, I might add!

Where did this Easter Bunny thingo come from? I never encountered it in my first forty years, until I came to Oz. Did it come from the USA? Here we don’t like rabbits much as there are so many of them (rabbits outnumber us by 500,000 to one) so some dullards have been trying to get us excited about the ‘Easter Bilby’. Have you ever heard of a bilby? What the f..k’s a bilby? More important, how many friggin’ bilbys are there?

It’s just another attention-seeking stunt. They do whatever it takes to get some media coverage. The egos of musicians and Hollywood stars make them do idiotic things just to make a buck. I can’t help but think protesting these art lunatics only fuels their insanity.

Easter Bunny is a big thing in American, though I can’t say whether we started it or not. I would be all for a six foot fully clothed chocolate Jesus, but a naked Jesus? I am Catholic, now I do not like the idea and would never go to such a showing, but I’m not going to hurt the guy. Though the thought crossed my mind.

N need to hide hatred and bigotry behind artistic and flowery words of “form” and “substance”. Both a chocolate and a Shiitte image can be claimed to honor and magnify. And both can be an insult and a slap in the face.
Balanced people can tell the difference: and the “artistic” world insults using dung and urine on Christian symbols. Deliberately - as an expression of hate speech that shows their soul with the ugly face in the “artistic” heart. Those who pretend this is “real art” - instead of deliberately blaspheming Christianity by showing (sexually!) an “anitomically-correct” naked image of Christ that mocks the chastity and reverence due the human form - are deliberately also ignoring the hatred the “art” community has for the Christian religion. I ponder where the “art communities” preference resides?
