CRISPE, F4J, & NCFMLA Stage Protest At Downtown Los Angeles Courthouse

Members of Father’s and men’s rights groups (CRISPE, F4J, and NCFMLA) protested today outside the  downtown, Los Angeles County Municipal Courthouse, that was hearing matters in the Baldwin-Basinger visitation dispute.

The protestors came from as far away as Sacramento and San Diego for a chance to express their opinions on “equal patenting” and other custody and visitation issues.

Approximately 25 to 30 protestors were present, although it was apparently difficult for the news media to determine crowd size. Some protestors walked around over a wide area, while a group of about twelve protested steadily in front of the West entrance to the L. A. County Municipal Court building at 110 N. Grand (near the intersection of Grand and 1 st. Street). Others protested across the street to the West and a few protested at the entrance were Kim Basinger is alleged to have entered the courthouse.

While Associated Press (above) reported only “about a dozen people” in attendance, Reuters (below) was much close to the actual number, reporting:

http://www.reuters.com/article/peopleNews/idUSN0434898020070504?pageNumber=2

“about two dozen men, many of them divorced, noncustodial fathers, staged a demonstration in support of Baldwin, carrying signs with such slogans as “Parental alienation is child abuse” and “Los Angeles County abuses fathers.’”

According to sources closely associated with the demonstration, 25 people were in attendance (mostly concerned men, but also a significant number of concerned women).

In just a quick Google search of the web, I noticed stories containing the Reuters and Associated Press snippets, appearing in states around America from New Hampshire to Colorado, and around the world from Canada, to Scotland, to India. By early evening, all mention of protestors had disappeared from the AP stories I was finding on the web, although Reuters still carried mention of the protestors in its coverage.

The protest lasted from 6:45 A.M. to 11 A.M. Reports came in during the protest that video of the protest was airing on local news stations. When I got home shortly before Noon, I turned on the news and was able to videotape a news report about the Baldwin-Basinger visitation dispute, that showed: protestors, the mobile red white and blue protest sign, and a short interview with a “parents rights advocate.” By the time the 5 o’clock news rolled around the Basinger-Baldwin visitation dispute was still making all the local news channels, but the entire portion showing the “equal parenting “protest was edited out.

While assembling this report, I listened to different TV news sources in the background to see if there may yet be some coverage of all the caring parents I saw today, working as a force for good. Alas, I heard nothing of those parents struggling to proactively further loving ties between parents and children.

Instead of responsible news coverage of the good I saw today, I heard different media outlets carry malevolent and sensationalistic news, of another Hollywood Actor allegedly being videotaped in a drunken stupor by his 16 year old daughter. Journalistic standards that determine what constitutes news, appear to me to be severely lacking any kind of moral or ethical balance, and are thereby an unbalanced reporting of what truly constitutes a truthful reflection of news worthy of reporting.

The “media beast” is indeed a ravenous beast. The media beast appears to be as much, or more, concerned with molding societies perception of what it thinks news is, as it is concerned with fairly conveying a true and balanced reflection of what actually is the news.

CRISPE, F4J, and NCFMLA are certainly working hard to change that as it regards issues of parenting (and other Father’s/men’s issues) in America.

Bugger the Mainstream media Ray. You are doing a great job telling the world through the internet. The montage of photos tells the story and the passion.

Fantastic job getting the groups together. Good to see the Purple Crispe truck and signs joining your signiture Black Ute and three line signs.

    You are the Man, Ray.

SAY not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

    If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the Main.

And not by eastern windows only,
    When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

(Ray’s rays dispel the night.) :)

Well done Ray, keep it up buddy…

    While were quoting good poetry….

A Mate Can Do No Wrong
    Henry Lawson

We learnt the creed at Hungerford,
    We learnt the creed at Bourke;
We learnt it in the good times
And learnt it out of work.
We learnt it by the harbour-side
    And on the billabong:
“No matter what a mate may do,
A mate can do no wrong!

“He’s like a king in this respect
    (No matter what they do),
And, king-like, shares in storm and shine
The Throne of Life with you.
We learnt it when we were in gaol
And put it in a song:
” No matter what a mate may do,
A mate can do no wrong!”

They’ll say he said a bitter word
    When he’s away or dead.
    We’re loyal to his memory,
    No matter what he said.
    And we should never hesitate,
But strike out good and strong,
And jolt the slanderer on the jaw –
A mate can do no wrong !

amfortas, this didn’t happen on the Internet: these people went out into the real world and did it in the streets.

They should have had a written press release explaining the issues, with links and some bibliography, to transmit to newsrooms and hand-out to the press whom they encountered. The reporters who were there came to see Baldwin and Basinger and were the gossip and entertainment detail, not the legal and social policy writers.

It also could have been much better publicized: it should have drawn many more than 30 protesters.

Isn’t it amazing how we have arsewipes that always denigrate and put down any effort made by any male, mostly by another male….

Want to make an effort, go out and do it yourself you whinging moron.

It was a pleasure and an honor to stand with my father-friends, and other men and women who support equal rights for all fit parents. I was happy, but not surprised by the huge amount of support from female drivers.

It is very disappointing to see the main media completely ignoring the women who were there. We were holding posters too; we were interviewed too. I still haven’t seen anything from the AP; the organization that interviewed me.

“A dozen” protesters”? Are they blind? Definitely closer to 30.

Angelo Lobo was there also, and interviewed several of us for the documentary “Support: System Down.” If anyone wants to help further this cause by donating money…send it to Angelo.

June 5th, eh? Anyone up for a repeat?

Thank you to everyone who was there! I’m proud to call you my friends!

Teri it was good seeing you and almost getting a chance to say hi. It was just so busy.

A lot of photos I took didn’t come out. Digital cameras are so slow writing to the flash card, that a second shot doesn’t happen when you want it to. A few of the shots were my fault, not holding the camera steady or straight. All in all I got enough photos to pretty accurately tell the story. Thanks goodness for the little cameras “image stabilization” feature. I know there were some people there that held signs that didn’t come out on the photos so I apologize to all those.

I’m not sure what June 5th is. Is that the next court date? I see from Glenn Sacks article that Kim B. is “happy,” but what does that mean for sure?

RAy, again, from Northern CA to see the photos, your truck, the men and women protesting, awesome. I said it two years ago, last year and this year, “you are the man” – with one hundred men like you we could make the changes needed because with a bright light shined on them, these judges and media personalities who trash men – because no one cares or protests, would soon scurry like the cock roaches they are.

  • Ray Blumhorst

I’m just happy to be a part of it. :-) You could really feel the synergy at yesterday’s event. The end result was truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Here is a link to local news video coverage, which showed some of the protest. As usual, there’s a short Ad preceding the video.

So far the Baldwin-Basinger story hasn’t made it beyond the gossip columns: the media who were present were paparazzi and weren’t there to report on and aren’t tuned in to the social and legal aspects of equal custody—which is why the protest got such limited mention in the stories that followed.

Media personalities and even judges don’t make policy.

The radio news is reporting that Barak Obama today pronounced fatherlessness a national problem and attacked fathers for `abandoning’ their children.

If he continues with this theme, it ought to provide a very good hook on which to introduce the equal parenting message into mainstream politics, comprising opportunities for raising the issue in debates and Q&As, demonstrating at candidate appearances, letters-to-the-editor, blogging, etc.

go ray…youre our southern california connection…The belly of the beast…

“The radio news is reporting that Barak Obama today pronounced fatherlessness a national problem and attacked fathers for `abandoning’ their children.”

I’m preparing some new protest signs, and had this one made up and ready to print. I just didn’t have time get the finished product out. I don’t particularly like the imagry on the left, but it’s all I have right now. It’s also too many words for a good soundbite, but it addresses what Obama and others in gov’t are doing to Dads.

Your Northwestern (Washington State) allies and brothers and sisters in arms are sending you all lots of kudos for getting out there and doing something. So many people are so willing to give advice but when it comes down to the rubber meeting the road…it never happens. We love you all for what you are doing and as a sistah in kind…especially you step moms, NCP moms, grandparents, wives and those of the female persuasion who are fighting the good fight….cheers to you!

    Keep up the good work!!

Thanks for the video, Ray. I’ve got some photos my friend Jet took. I’m still trying to recover from the very full weekend; I’ll post them eventually.

Yes, June 5th is their next court hearing.

Now I know how to be better prepared. Next time I won’t stay across the street when the local media walks over with a microphone.

Sure wish the AP guy had used what I said about feminism. Or maybe he did, and the main media chose to ignore that part.

Again I have to say, I’m sure glad I’m not male. How depressing to be hated by the media. If it’s any comfort at all…I love you guys!

  • http://www.stopfatherabuse.org Abused Father

It was a real honor to join the demonstration in front of the LA County Courthouse and to meet other fine men and women (with a special “hello” to Ray and Teri) who have the integrity to stand up to the monsters that run our corrupt court systems. The power of just a few can have far reaching effects. I’m proud to state that my sign “Los Angeles County Abuses Fathers” was published by news agencies around the world – so far, I’ve found stories mentioning it in Pakistan, Nepal, and New Zealand. Why is it that the world can see the corruption here but the monsters who run our courts and governmental agencies turn a deaf ear upon the bigotry that they propagate?

As far as another demonstration on June 5th, I’m more than willing to attend. Having just been subjected to another unethical, vile, bigoted, monstrous commissioner from Orange County (Renee E. Wilson) who is going to get slapped with an appeal for her blatant disregard for the abuse my children are being subjected to, I’ll have the reverse of my sign read “Orange County Courts Abuse Fathers” for the next demonstration.

I love your new sign, Ray – may I use it on some other sites?

    For now, visit:

    http://www.stopfatherabuse.org

to post other horror stories. A new site:

    http://www.orangecountyfamilylawcourt.org

(at the moment, nothing has been created – the link should start working in a few days) is being developed to expose monsters like Renee E. Wilson and to encourage abused Orange County parents to come forward with their stories. At the moment, it seems as if LA and San Diego Counties have established organizations – it’s time for something to get started in OC too.
