Derek Jeter and His Girlfriends–Is Jeter the Lucky One?

New York Yankee star shortstop Derek Jeter often dates beautiful women, and a common story in the media is how “lucky” Jeter is. In November The Onion published the satirical piece Derek Jeter Dating Jessica Biel, Repeatedly Reports Derek Jeter (11/30/06):

“NEW YORK—According to his teammates, other MLB players, Yankee management, friends, relatives, his old college professors, and any random stranger with whom he has come into contact during the past two days, Derek Jeter is dating former 7th Heaven star Jessica Biel.

“‘Last night, me—me, Derek Jeter—and the beautiful, charming Jessica Biel were laughing, talking, and, yes, kissing in a dark corner of the hip L.A. nightclub Hyde,’ Jeter told reporters from the New York Daily News, New York Post’s ‘Page Six,’ Us Weekly, Star, National Enquirer, New York Times, London Free Press, Cleveland Plain-Dealer, and 128 other national and local publications Sunday.

“‘Just thought you all might want to know—we’re an item. Yup, it’s official. We really hit it off, she is incredibly sexy, and we will be attending a party together this Saturday night at Club Element in case you want to take pictures. Can you believe this?!’ Jeter added that, although he was upset about not winning the AL Most Valuable Player award, he ‘doesn’t see Justin Morneau dating anyone who was named Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive in 2005.’”

The latest example of this can be seen in www.AskMen.com‘s new Beauty Pageant: Derek Jeter’s Girlfriends. I’m not a great fan of beauty pageants and rating women’s looks, etc., but that’s not my point here. Speaking of  Jessica Alba (pictured above), Jeter’s current romance, Askmen.com writes, “Derek Jeter sure struck gold when he landed this sultry senorita.”

My point, in case you haven’t guessed it, is this–why is Derek Jeter so “lucky”? Jeter beat out odds of a million to one to become one of the best players in baseball and a future Hall of Famer. Alba, Biel and the others were…what? Born to be beautiful, and they didn’t screw it up by getting out of shape. OK, good for them. But while Jeter is the beneficiary of great athletic ability, he’s an intelligent player who has had to work vastly harder (and in a dangerous profession), and has achieved far more than any of these women. How exactly is he the “lucky” one to have a romantic relationship with them?
