Workfare vs. child safety

Many people cruelly criticized Deborah Eappen for working part-time and blamed her for the death of her baby. Will these same people direct their fire at the government for forcing welfare mothers into the Cobb job search program and workfare if one of their babies is killed by a caregiver?

There’s good reason to get welfare mothers out and into the workforce. A babysitter who kills a child is a COMPLETELY different problem! Two problems, not one.

In one problem we must take action to get more women working. Doing so creates a large number of benefits for all concerned.

In the other problem, daycare-babysitters, we need to look at providers in such a way that we filter out the bad ones. We do not want to dump a bureaucratic mess onto daycare-babysitting, but we do want to find and remove the bad providers. A bit of thinking on our part will provide an answer.

    Hi Denise,

I should had started my post with “casting no aspersions on you.” I was speaking in a general sense. I know you don’t think or believe that way.

(Denise) Thank you, Joi and I’m glad you know I “don’t think or believe that way.” If you want to know what I believe about the traditional husband breadwinner-wife homemaker family, see http://mensnewsdaily.com/2007/01/05/two-cheers-for-the-cleavers-–-and-their-real-life-counterparts.

Women claim constantly that married women whom remain at home while supported by their husbands and raise children are an “oppressed class.”

(Denise) I’m not one of those women, Joi. I don’t call married women an “oppressed class” if they are supported by their husbands.

Joi: Yet, the Feminists never claim that a woman whom remains at home while supported by their GOVERNMENT and raise children are never called an “oppressed class.”

(Denise) I don’t call either an “oppressed class.”

So, being a married woman whom is a stay-at-home mother raising children is BAD. Yet, being single or divorced and becoming a stay-at-home mother raising children is GOOD.

(Denise) I don’t see anything wrong with being a stay-at-home mother regardless of the source of support for it.

joi: So, if the government supports these women that is acceptable, but if an “evil man” is doing the same it is oppression, and perpetuating the patriarchy.

(Denise) I don’t consider men “evil” who support wives and/or children.

joi: There are no limit to feminist, anti-male, double standards.

(Denise) I have a single standard for ladies who stay home to raise their children regardless of their source of support.

(Denise) You got a little garbled here. I think you meant to say “killed by the caregiver” instead of “killed by the mother.” A mother on welfare might have had grounds you could accept for “unilaterally divorcing her husband” or she might have been divorced by him or she and her ex-husband might have mutually decided to split. It could also be the case that the ex-husband was himself unable to support the wife and children. Many men don’t earn enough to support themselves (witness the male homeless) much less wives and children.
