The proposed EU constitution met with defeat in 2005. As predicted (see link in article to left) supporters found a way around the democratic process. They have reintroduced a barely modified version as a treaty to avoid public referenda.
In view of this development, I think readers should be aware of the research and analysis of Vladimir Bukovksy, the 64-year old former Soviet dissident who fears (as I do) that the European Union is on its way to becoming another Soviet Union. In a speech delivered in Brussels (February, 2006), Mr Bukovsky called the EU a “monster” that must be destroyed, the sooner the better, before it develops into a full-fledged totalitarian state. (interview, commentary, and text of speech)
Mr. Bukovsky dug up evidence in now opened Soviet archives that points to a socialist conspiracy; and he puts the author of the proposed constitution, Giscard d-Estaing, in the middle of it. He describes pseudo-democratic efforts to advance their agenda “a trick for idiots. The people have to vote in referendums until the people vote the way that is wanted. Then they have to stop voting.” The speech was given before EU bosses decided to bypass referenda and bring the proposed constitution into law directly against the will of the people.
How can EU citizens stop the political machine from running over them? Changing ideas, especially political ideas, often requires replacing people. That’s democracy. And that’s the piece of democracy missing in the development of an EU constitution. Even if good intent rather than conspiracy is assumed; Albert Einstein provided the wisdom to proceed when he pointed out that problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them. It is clear that the process is now controlled by a group of people with only one idea; a previously failed political idea that has been rejected by the more enlightened European population of the 21st century.
What is needed is a demand for special elections that allow the people, rather than the political machinery of Europe, to decide who the members of the constitutional committee will be. Another easy prediction: at least the vast majority elected by the people would be among those who solidly reject the current draft, as well as any “trick for idiots” used to pass a constitution into law.
