Ex-Baseball Star Cecil Fielder–Male Victim of Domestic Violence?

2007-07-10

Background: In my recent blog post It’s Time for Prince Fielder to Forgive Cecil Fielder, His Father, I discussed former baseball star Cecil Fielder’s divorce, and his estrangement from his son, 2007 All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder.

Cecil Fielder (pictured) earned $47 million during his career, and he and his ex-wife Stacey Fielder had two children, Prince and Ceclynn, 15.

In the late ’90s/early ’00s, Cecil Fielder lost an enormous amount of money in bad business deals and through his gambling addiction. Stacey Fielder was apparently unaware of what was happening, and without warning had the once-wealthy lifestyle she expected to enjoy the rest of her life cut out from underneath her.

Research clearly shows that women are just as likely to physically attack their husbands or boyfriends as vice versa, and that between 30% and 40% of the injuries sustained in heterosexual domestic violence are sustained by men. According to the Detroit News, during the Cecil Fielder/Stacey Fielder divorce:

“In sworn documents filed with the court, [Cecil] Fielder claims his wife was ‘physically and mentally abusive’ to him, hitting him with a broomstick, stabbing him in the side with a fork, threatening to get a gun and shoot him, and telling him she had stood over him with a knife as he slept, thinking about whether to stab him.

“In her filings, Stacey Fielder alleged her husband had engaged in ‘an avalanche of misconduct’ that caused her angry outbursts, and asked the court to enjoin her husband ‘from dissipating any more assets.’”

In other words, she apparently does not deny Cecil’s allegations, but instead justifies her conduct by saying she was angry. Well, Stacey Fielder certainly had reason to be angry with Cecil Fielder, but that doesn’t justify violence, or threats of it.

She definitely had no reason to be angry with Cecil. It was his money which he earned with his effort and talent and it was his right to do as he pleased with it. If she wanted money for herself, she should have worked and earned it and done as she pleased with it.

Right.
