I’ve often criticized the Christian Right’s policies on marriage. My complaints are:
1) They ignore the true threat to marriage and parents’ rights–the family law system.
2) They do nothing to defend fathers’ rights, which are particularly vulnerable under the current system.
3) They bash gays.
4) They waste an appalling amount of time and effort on trivial issues like gay marriage while ignoring the real threat to marriage–the family law system. I recently wrote:
“Ignorant me, I thought that marriage was under greater threat from the fact that hundreds of thousands of innocent men have been booted out of their homes on restraining orders based on false charges. Or that courts allow children of divorce to be dragged half way across the country so vindictive mothers can exclude their fathers from their lives. Or that stacked domestic violence laws allow men to be jailed and ruined with little evidence. Or that the abusive child support system often traps low income men in a hopeless spiral of debt. Or that family courts are allowing military parents to be permanently removed from their children’s lives while they’re overseas.”
Now Larry Bowler and Randy Thomasson of www.VoteYesMarriage.com are airing anti-gay marriage ads on California radio stations, seeking to raise $2 million to place a “Protect Marriage Initiative” on the 2008 Ballot. Beyond all of the other problems with this, I have a gripe. We in California are working hard to try to defend marriage and parents’ rights, and to promote shared parenting. Given how short we are on funding, we actually do pretty damn well. We could accomplish much, much more with even a small fraction of the $2 million being wasted on fighting the “threat” of gay marriage.ÂÂ
Former Assemblyman Larry Bowler urges ‘financially blessed’ listeners to make major contribution to campaign to override judges and politicians
SACRAMENTO, July 18 /Christian Newswire/ — The VoteYesMarriage.com coalition, sponsor of The Voters’ Right to Protect Marriage Initiative to permanently and fully protect marriage for one man and one woman in the California State Constitution, is airing radio ads up and down California urging “people of means” to generously donate to the marriage protection campaign. The radio ads come at the same time that the VoteYesMarriage.com initiative has been cleared for signature gathering.
The VoteYesMarriage.com ads are airing on conservative talk, Christian talk, and Christian music stations in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, Oxnard, Santa Barbara, Monterey County, San Francisco, Sacramento, Modesto, Fresno, and Bakersfield. The 60-second spot features former Assemblyman Larry Bowler of Elk Grove, an official proponent of the initiative.
