Guns Don?t Kill People, Idiotic Laws and Naive Politicians Do

Prediction: The violent crime rate in Chicago is about to rise.

Sure, the above prediction is about as surprising as saying “Katie Couric’s ratings will continue to drop,” but it will probably turn out that way. Why is the Chicago violent crime rate about to go up? Because there are bureaucrats trying to make it go down. That’s right, in Chicago it’s time for another futile at best, counter-productive at worst, gun buyback program.:

City officials again will use the carrot approach to reducing the number of guns in Chicago, by offering a $100 pre-paid gift card for each weapon turned in this weekend.

Mayor Richard Daley said no questions will be asked Saturday of people who visit one of 23 locations designated as drop-off sites. The surrendered handguns, shotguns and rifles they leave behind will be destroyed by police.

“One of the best crime-fighting strategies at our disposal is very simple — getting guns off our streets … and out of the hands of people who, unfortunately, would misuse them,” Daley said during a news conference at a Near North Side church.

What are the odds that the people who turn their guns in for $100 gift cards are people who only have the guns for self defense because they’re scared to death by being surrounded by all the violent crime, but nonetheless find that $100 in groceries would really help their family? The buyback could cost somebody their life.

What are the odds that somebody will turn in, say, five guns at five different locations, get $500 in gift cards, sell the $500 in gift cards to somebody else for $400 in cash, then go buy a nice new gun somewhere else and pocket a few dollars in the process? It’s similar to what has happened before with the food stamp program.

What are the odds that a gun store in a surrounding area is about to be burglarized by somebody who will turn in a few stolen guns for the gift cards, and keep a couple for himself?

What are the odds that somebody who uses his gun to make thousands of dollars robbing people is going to turn it in for a $100 gift card?

The government is back in the debit card business? What can possibly go wrong?

And where did all these guns come from anyway? Chicago bans all handguns unless they were registered with police before 1983, but yet they’ve collected 4,300 guns with the annual turn-in program, and still the guns keep popping up in seemingly endless supply like Tribbles with triggers. This year there have been 225 homicides in Chicago, with handguns involved in 80% of those.

The problem for Mayor Daley is that most people aren’t as stupid as his City Council.

Today’s trivia question: If banning guns across-the-board causes the crime rate to drop, why doesn’t Daley order his police force and bodyguards to turn theirs in?

I just spent a week in Canada, listening to local media. The BIG story is right now how their gun registration program has massively lowered the crime rate. From what I can tell, htey are reporting lower crime for sure, and indded they did do a registration. I would like to hear the other side of this argument from a canadian in the know…these things are rarely more then ideological proclamations.

Hey, we have good news here in Missouri! Because so many people got really mad about Bond going along with Bush on the border amnesty, it has now been passed that if someone enters your home, and you shoot them, you will not be liable.

Which makes me wonder what’s coming that we dont’ know about?

Chicago…Al Capone, and now Hillary. The democratic corruption has only changed hands.

Give me a shotgun over a pit bull, any day.

The leftwing nutcase that got a gun, then went to a liberal utopia (AKA a “gun free” university campus) and killed people, would not have killed nearly as many if the right to personal defense had not been stripped away. In fact, the liberal, killer, nutcase would most likely would not have even tried to pull that stunt if he knew there would be people shooting back.

The blood of the dead at V-Tech is on the hands of liberal fools who banned the right to personal defense, by banning law abiding citizens from carrying firearms to defend themselves!!!

    dzipio said,

You apparently don’t want to admit that the most likely person to be shot with a handgun is someone in that person’s family.

What lib/idiot playbook did you get that lie from? Go look up John Lott, and get an education.

How many people would that wacko at Virginia Tech have killed with a stick and a stone?

You mean in that wonderful “gun-free safe-zone”? It’s great those students were prevented from hurting themselves accidentally, eh? It’s awesome they weren’t allowed to protect themselves.

Good thing you right wing gun nuts made sure that guy in the Western burbs could get a gun and murder his wife and kids.

Don’t know who you’re talking about, but obviously he could never have killed anyone without a gun, huh?

It would have been a shame that you couldn’t go shoot off your little toys when you want to.

I don’t actually own a gun right now, and haven’t for a decade or so. But with you liberal hemorrhoids out there trying to destroy the American constitution, I think it’s time I went shopping. You should be proud you’ve helped the gun manufacturers sell their products.

Guns make it easier for people to defend themselves. I remember being taught in school, before liberalism took the schools over, that the invention of the handgun was the “great equalizer.” Yup. You know, so grandma, grandpa, the fragile female, or anyone else is the equal to anyone else, because what fool attacks when he knows his life can be blown away in an instance? That’s why the right to self-defense is so critical.

Yet, lets go a little deeper and remember this, the Creature (the state) cannot exceed the Creator (the people). It is the people (a real breathing living thing) not the state who have the right to self defense and who thus employed the state (other people) to help take care of that job, so that they could take care of their farms and their families without having to look over their shoulder 24-7. That the state (a group of people of elected and appointed people who possess a limited delegation of power) should take to itself and outlaw the right of self defense to their neighbors who hired them, retaining it only to themselves is ludicrous, and against every principle of equality before the law, and of God-given rights that we have come to know. But you know, liberalism is a mental disorder, and that’s what happens when people stop thinking and trust it all to a few elites.

Guns do not kill people, abortion clinics kill people.

Since 1973, about 42,000,000 American children aborted – about an average of 3,500 children per day.

    http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/policy/abortion/ab-unitedstates.html

Since 1976, about 290,000 American citizens killed by a gun – about an average of 25 people per day.

You should go to england where almost all guns are illegal and they have no crime at all….Oh wait their violent crime rate is MUCH HIGHER than ours including assult with a deadly weapon rape murder burglery etc the list goes on!!

If you want to be an unarmed victim go ahead….for the rest of us this country PROTECTS our HUMAN right to defend ourselves…..BTW your stat about the most likely person to shoot being a family member is a lie.

Pens make it easier to write letters and guns make it a lot easier to kill people. How many people would that wacko at Virginia Tech have killed with a stick and a stone? You apparently don’t want to admit that the most likely person to be shot with a handgun is someone in that person’s family. Good thing you right wing gun nuts made sure that guy in the Western burbs could get a gun and murder his wife and kids. Hurricane Katrina really showed me the folly of gun control. I’m not sure who uttered the very famous quote, “A polite society, is an armed society,” was clearly in the right, both literally and politically. It’s funny, the older I get the more I see how wrong the left is, and how right the right is.

    Let’s see.
Now there’s a new market to replace the “old” guns, AGAIN.
The “going rate” for handguns on the street is now $90, and you don’t even have to go on camera at the store honoring those pesky coded “gift cards”.
There’s an assured market in Chicago for guns stolen from ANYWHERE.
(that ought to elevate the trafficking toward Chicago for $90 stolen firearms by the trunkload)
    Thanks Mr. Mayor!

Firearms are just the instruments people use to kill or injure one another.

Would you libs feel any better if the bad guys use sticks and stones?

    Great point, Denis! Well said!

  • Denis

If guns are responsible for killing then my pen is responsible for what I write.

  • The Vicar

    Amen!
