“Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider. With more than 860 health centers nationwide, nearly five million women, men, and teens turn to us each year for essential services services we provide regardless of income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence.
Planned Parenthood offers high-quality health care, including birth control and family planning, gynecological care, STI/STD testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, and abortion services. Our providers prevent an estimated 617,000 unintended pregnancies annually, helping to ensure that everyone has the right to choose when or whether to have a child, and that every child is wanted and loved.”
Quote from the Planned Parenthood Web site
Who can argue with the noble mission of Planned Parenthood (PPFA)? With the AIDS epidemic raging out of control, and unwanted teen pregnancies a major problem — educators, ministers, politicians and the general public should support this magnificent organization.
PPFA receives praise and support from forward-thinking individuals from all walks of life. They have received awards for their fine work from many organizations.
Unfortunately, the religious right has PPFA in its crosshairs. They never miss an opportunity to denigrate, besmirch and misrepresent the goals and services of PPFA.
Jonathan Falwell, the son of the deceased Jerry Falwell, has been pastor of Thomas Baptist Church for only a few months, but already he has written a couple of editorials slamming Planned Parenthood.
Instead of tackling the problems of racism, homelessness, unemployment or lack of affordable health care, Falwell uses his bully pulpit and his financial resources to attack PPFA.
In an article entitled “Striking Back at Planned Parenthood”, Jonathan Falwell writes:
“There is a movement afoot to strip Planned Parenthood of millions of annual taxpayer dollars. One of the leaders in this effort is Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who I mentioned last week as being a chief cog in the effort to halt activation of the Fairness Doctrine, which Democrats hope to use to stifle conservative talk radio.
Rep. Pence, a rising star in the Republican Party, this week offered an amendment to the House appropriations bill (H.R. 3043) that funds the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, in order to prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding Planned Parenthoods abortion efforts.
Sadly, the amendment was defeated (189-231).
I’m praying that down the road, we will be able to stop Planned Parenthood from receiving our tax dollars while performing a quarter-of-a-million abortions annually.”
The vast majority of Americans support PPFA, but this worthwhile organization has a few enemies that are committed to its destruction. We must remain vigilant, and defeat any attempt to curtail the work of PPFA.
