Fred Thompson raises $3 million, falls short of $5 million goal
Presidential hopeful Fred Thompson reports that he raised $3 million dollars in June for his all-but-certain White House bid. According to the Associated Press, this sum falls short of the $5 million goal set for June, which was the first month he set out to fundraise.
The $3 million dollars was more than what several other Republicans raised, but “Thompson’s take doesn’t even compare to the stunning $6.5 million haul that Mitt Romney collected on a single day in January as he was exploring a bid.” According to The Politico, the money shows that “a prospective Thompson run is a flop. ‘I just don’t see it anymore,’ said a key Republican who had been extremely enthusiastic about a Thompson candidacy.”
Recently Jeri Kehn, Thompson’s second wife, “has suddenly emerged as the real political power behind her husband Fred’s presidential campaign.” According to the Sunday Telegraph, Kehn’s role in the camapign is “troubling.” Furthermore, “Her good looks and penchant for figure-hugging dresses with plunging necklines inevitably draw attention to their 25-year age gap. They have also reminded commentators of Mr Thompson’s reputation as a “ladies’ man” after his 1985 divorce – something that may not play well with the social conservatives he is courting in his bid to become the Republican candidate.” Mismanagement and delayed entry into the presidential race are some of the speculative reasons for a drop off in fundraising.
