At least 100 landless people in southwestern Brazil have taken over a ranch owned by South Korean religious leader, Reverend Sun Myung Moon.
Authorities on Monday said about 300 landless, farming families had camped out for several years on the side of roads near the property known as Jamaica Farm, in Brazil’s western state, Mato Grosso do Sul.
During that time, Brazil’s agrarian land reform agency, Incra, has been considering a complaint as to whether the ranch land was unproductive and therefore subject to expropriation for use by the landless.
The families were tired of waiting for a ruling and invaded the property without a court’s permission. A court decision must ultimately decide the case of whether the landless can remain.
Moon and his followers have bought up large tracts of land in Brazil.
